Twice his master took the money and kept him in bondage. By his mid-fifties, however, thorough the help of white friends, he had bought not only his freedom but also that of his wife, son and grandchild. He then made his way to England and published a lit- tle book that was widely distributed by the aboli- tionists. Moses Grandy was born about 1786 on the farm of William Grandy in Camden County, North Carolina. His master was a "hard drinking man", but Moses was treated well because he was the favorite playmate of James, the master's son. When William Grandy died, however, Moses was given to James who was, of course, not of legal age. Consequently Moses was hired out to the highest bidder each year, the money going to the account of his former playmate. He had a succession of temporary masters, the first being Enoch Sawyer, one of the county's most prominent citizens and the local ferry keeper. Moses charged later that Sawyer was a hard mas- ter, forcing him to work in the winter without shoes. He sometimes aroused hogs in order to warm his feet on the ground upon which they had slept. Some of his temporary masters, like Richard Furley (Furlow?), were good to him. While with Furley, Moses was a carboy, driving lumber from the Dismal Swamp. In fact, Moses was allowed to hire himself out for piecework, and he made more than enough to pay Furley for his annual bid. Consequently, the young slave began saving money. But then James Grandy came of age, and, for- getting their childhood friendship, he required Moses to pay even more for the privilege of work- ing for wages. The young slave ran boats through the Dismal Swamp Canal and added to his sav- ings. He married a woman belonging to Enoch Sawyer, but about eight months afterward, his wife was sold and taken away. He never saw her again. Nevertheless, the industrious Moses finally saved enough money to buy himself from James Grandy. His master, however, took his $600 and refused to go to the courthouse and sign the emancipation papers. Instead, Grandy sold Moses to a Mr. Trewitt, who again put him to work on canal boats. Once again, Moses, after several years, had saved enough money to buy himself. Only after he had paid Trewitt did the slave discover tat his mas- ter has defaulted and that, as chattel property, he was to be sold again to satisfy creditors. This time he was purchased by Enoch Sawyer, who allowed him to continue as boat captain in return for a portion of his wages. Moses remarried and saved enough money, though not enough. Finally, Moses persuaded Captain Edward Miner of Deep Creek to buy him with the understanding that he would eventually purchase his own free- dom. After several years, Moses for the third time paid $600 for his emancipation. This time the hon- est master let him go. Moses Grandy continued working aboard costal vessel, then began taking longer trips --- to New England and to the Indies. He saved enough to purchase the freedom of his wife, a son and a grandson. Six other children remained in slavery in New Orleans. It was to enable him to earn enough to purchase their freedom and that of a sister that he decided to go to England and allow his story to be published in book form. The little book described one of the cruelties practiced by some slaveholders. Moses's mother, old and blind, was given a miserable hut in the woods. There she lived alone scratching out a lit- tle corn from a small plot of cleared land. Occasionally fellow slaves shared their skimpy rations or caught a fish for her. Moses Grandy wrote: "No care is taken of them, except, perhaps, that a little ground is cleared about the hut, on which the old slave, if able, may raise a little corn. As far as the owner is concerned, they live or die as it happens; it is just the same as turning out an old horse." - Originally published May 3, 1978 This tale is from Dr. H. G. Jones book "Scoundrels, Rogues and Heroes of the Old North State" which is revised and updated. It is edited by K. Randall Jones and Caitlin Jones.
