As completed by the U.S. Travel Association, this week, the North Caro- lina Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development gave the results of the their annual tourism study. This study of the economic impact of travel on North Carolina counties showed that in 2009, 94 of 100 North Carolina counties saw a drop in overall tourism expenditures. Rutherford County was no exception – we saw an overall expenditure drop of 11.6%. But the county’s preliminary numbers from fi scal year 2009-10 show our occupancy tax collections dropped only 5.2%. In addition, in 2009, the county held its position as the 26th most visited county in the state. (Occupancy taxes are collected from each overnight visitor staying in a lodging property.
