Special Olympian Billy Callahan carried the Special Olympics Torch, accompanied by Sheriff Aaron Ellenburg, to begin the games. Ellenburg and others from the Sheriff's Offi ce presented the medals and awards to the athletes. There were 125 athletes and young athletes participating in the spring games. There were 75 school age buddy volunteers and approximately 60 event team and general volunteers working with the athletes throughout the day. Sponsors for the event included: R-S Middle School (host school); Rutherford County Schools; Rutherford County Schools Education Foundation; RHI Legacy Foundation; Nantahala Health Foundation and The WNC Bridge Foundation. The athletes participated in one track and one fi eld activity, either long jump or softball throw. All athletes are winners and all athletes received a number of awards and medals.
