Memories fl ood my soul as I think of Mother's Day and as I remember Mama with respect and great love. Though in heaven since 1999, I see Mama today in the lives of her children, her grandchildren and her amazing 10 great- grandchildren - ages 24 years to 4 years old. She always said one of her granddaughters would have twins. As it turns out, three of her granddaughters birthed twins - she would have been such a great- grandmother here on earth. Mama's life is refl ected also in the lives of her sister and brother, nieces and nephews and other family members. I remember vividly standing in front of a large display of Mother's Day cards in 1999 and knew in my heart of hearts, I would be purchasing the last card for Mama on her special day. So I deliberately took a lot of time to choose the card. You see, my Mama was the best one ever. As I think about Mama, I can see her in so many places doing so many things - at one time. She was a multi-tasker long before those words took meaning. Her hands were not idle on this earth. I see Mama cooking her favorite suppers for her family and later in the evening, she'd sew for the public and make clothes for her family. She made meals for those needing food. I see Mama with Daddy smiling from ear to ear as they drove out of their driveway in 1998 for a 21- day trip out west to visit her sister. They took in the sites in between traveling the northern route to Nevada and the southern route to Forest City. That was their dream trip. I see Mama displaying compassion to the underdog around her; visiting residents of a nearby rest home who never had a single visitor except her. She made sure these precious ones weren't forgotten at Christmas and she enlisted her Sunday School class members to help her throw them a Christmas party with gifts each year. I see Mama at church. She was a PK - preacher's kid - and was always in church. She taught her family church going and having a relationship with the Lord was of the utmost importance. For that I'm eternally grateful. Vacations were the rewards after a hard year of working. Camping was the best time ever. I see Mama having fun. She was the example of a hard worker who loved a week off for her family vacation. She spent a sleepless night before we were to depart the next morning for our July 4th week's vacation. She was so excited to be spending quality time with her family and it was not unusual for her to shed a tear or two when the vacation was over. She took vacations seriously. She played Scrabble with us and endured long hours of Monopoly on a rainy camping day. Trips to the ocean meant crab catching, fi shing and oyster digging. She waded the inlet with the rest of us. Back at the hotel she'd throw the crabs in steaming hot water for a special fresh crab leg supper. I can see her walking along a sandy beach picking up one shell after another, washing them and bringing them home. A oyster shell path behind my shed today includes her shell collections. Picnics along the Blue Ridge Parkway were an annual tradition. Springs and summers were spent working in gardens and she and Daddy would subsequently sell produce to the public. She made the best chow- chow ever. I can see Mama up to her knees in mud trying to salvage precious tomato plants after a fl ood and I fondly remember her driving her little cub tractor beside Daddy on his big John Deere. She loved an adventure. Mama loved Daddy, her daughters and family unconditionally. Nothing changed her love for us. Unbelievable heartbreak would come to our family in 1981 with the loss of our parents' fi rst daughter at age 30. Mama was our example that bad things do happen to good people, and our hope would lie in the everlasting arms of Jesus and we would see our sister again. Mama's life wasn't easy and there were many disappointing times, of course. But she persevered through it all and taught us to do the same. Mama taught me many lessons about compassion, kindness, patience, faithfulness to her family and friends and giving up was not an option. She taught us it was better to give than receive. She taught me about inner beauty and that it counted more than anything else. Mama loved family gatherings, holidays and always trying new holiday recipes. She taught her family the Lord would supply all of our needs and to depend on God. In the fi nal days of her life, my sisters and I would crawl in her bed and snuggle with her. We made sure she knew we were there. We reminded her she was the best mama God ever made. We knew it to be a fact. Happy Mother's Day.
