In junior varsity action Chargers big bats lead to big win over Vincennes By Joye Hamilton Karley Kavanaugh's grand slam and Alyna Sharp's three- run homer helped propel the Pike Central Lady Chargers to a 19 -9 non-conference victory over the Lady Alices' of Vin- cennes Lincoln. Pike Central pounded 17 hits over the five innings played, with six players having a mul- tiple hit game. Kavanaugh and Sharp accounted for 10 of the runs as they both contributed five RBIs. The Lady Chargers scored in each of the first four innings. A fter two outs in the first, Kavanaugh received a base on balls and moved to sec- ond on a single by Madelyn Fiscus to center. Chargers softball takes first loss since season opener By Joye Hamilton A late inning comeback was just a little too late as the Lady Chargers lost their first confer- ence game 4-3 to Mount Ver- non Saturday on the road. Pike Central put three on the board in the sixth inning but could not overtake the La- dy Wildcats, who scored two in the second inning and two in the fifth. Pike Central had base run- ners in the first three in- nings. Brailey Mills singled in the first to lead off the game, Taryn Fiscus got hit by a pitch in the second and Macey Stil- well singled in the third. All were stranded on the base path. Mt. Williams then got the final two outs on a strike- out and a fly out, but not be- fore surrendering her second wild pitch of the inning to al- low Salee to score. Pike Central Coach Dustin Traylor came to the defense of his pitcher and her unfamiliar wild pitch performance. ( Wil- liams only had five wild pitches in her previous 16 games this season). "Mt Vernon played a 10 inning game Friday night and I don't feel like they didn't any field maintenance in front of the pitching rubber," said Traylor. "There were holes in the landing spots that when the ball rolled into it you could not see the ball anymore. (It was) terrible and definitely affected our pitchers," added Traylor. The Lady Wildcats add- ed two runs more in the fifth as Cora Bell reached first af- ter being hit by a pitch and scored on a bunt by Hannah West that was misplayed by Charger third baseman Del- aney Welch. West went to third base on the error. Alaina Allyn grounded into a fielder's choice two batters later, scor- ing West from third. The bot- tom of the fifth ended with the Wildcats up 4-0. Mills led off the top of the sixth with a bunt single to start the Charger rally. She then moved to second as Stilwell earned a walk. They went on to an 11-1 victory, in a game shortened to just five innings due to the Indiana High school Athletic Association (IHSA A) 10 -run rule. A fter taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning Tecumseh came back to push another run across home plate in the bottom of the second inning to go up 5 -0. Pike Central scored a run in the top of the third in- ning to reduce the Brave lead to 5 -1. The Chargers held Te- cumseh without a run in the bottom half of the third and the score stood at 5 -1 as the two league opponents headed into the fourth frame. Tecumseh held the Char- gers without a score in the top of the fourth, but the hosts again jumped on Pike Central for another four runs for a 9 -1 margin after four innings. Tecumseh again held Pike Central without a run in the top of the fifth frame, but in the bottom of the fifth, the Braves plated two more runs to stop the contest with the 10 -run rule. Senior Braydn Bender went the distance on the mound for Tecumseh, allowing Pike Central just the one run on two hits. Bender struck out eight Chargers and walked two in his complete game effort. The loss left Pike Central with a 2-11 season record, in- cluding a 0 -8 mark in confer- ence games. PC baseball falls to Titans By Mike Sandifar Press Dispatch Sports drhoops25@gmail.com Coach Dustin Powell's Pike Central Charger baseball team fell to Pocket Athletic Confer- ence rival Gibson Southern at Charger Field last Tuesday— but not without a heck of a fight. The game was not decid- ed until the final out in the bot- tom of the seventh inning! Gibson Southern jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but in the bottom of the second in- ning, the Chargers came back to knot the score at 2-2. Freshman J.J. Belmore opened the bottom of the second with a single, and af- ter back to back outs, senior Gavin Pancake poked a sin- gle to put runners on first and second for the hosts, with two outs.
