As part of their ongoing collabora on, Campus Pride and Common App have released "A Brief Guide to Common App's Name, Sex, and Gender Ques ons for Member Ins tu ons." The guide aims to help colleg- es and universi es understand and u lize the infor- ma on provided by Common App in the 2022-2023 applica on cycle. The guide is available for download at CampusPride.org/Publica ons. Common App is used by over 1 million students as they apply to more than 1000 colleges and univer- si es each year. Campus Pride is proud to collabo- rate with Common App on their Evolving the Applica- on ini a ve, which aims to reduce the barriers stu- dents face in applying to college. For over a decade, Campus Pride has advo- cated for greater inclusion of LGBTQ+ students in col- lege admissions. As part of that advocacy, Campus Pride has offered strategic recommenda ons to make the Common App more inclusive of LGBTQ+ prospec ve students, especially trans and nonbinary applicants. "Common App is to be applauded for recognizing the importance of students being able to bring their au- then c selves to the college applica on process. It's equally cri cal that colleges and universi es know how to use the informa on students provide in ways that support them when they apply and matricu- late," said Dr. Genny Beemyn, Campus Pride Trans Policy Clearinghouse Coordinator and the author of the guide. Since some of the new language in the applica on may be unfamiliar to those working in higher edu- ca on admissions, Campus Pride and Common App recognized the need to provide defini ons and help- ful informa on about best prac ces. To that end, Campus Pride developed "A Brief Guide to Common App's Name, Sex, and Gender Ques ons for Mem- ber Ins tu ons," which provides details about recent and expected changes to the name, sex, and gender ques ons. The guide also provides recommenda- ons for how colleges and universi es should u lize the informa on acquired from these Common App ques ons. Last year, Common App made changes to the lan- guage used for legal sex and gender iden ty, as well as offering addi onal op ons for indica ng pronouns. This year, Common App changes have included clear- er language about legal names and other names in use, as well as the addi on of Mx. to the list of honor- ifics that can be selected. Addi onal changes to the applica on are planned for the 2023-2024 applica on cycle. "Campus Pride looks for- ward to ongoing collabora- on with Common App," said Shane Mendez Wind- meyer, Execu ve Director of Campus Pride. "There is much work to be done to con nue addressing the evolving inclusion needs of prospec ve LGBTQ+ col- lege students."
