I think of all the hunters who are enjoying the spoils of victory right now. They are making some of the best chili or spaghetti sauce with the ground deer from their freezer. Others are slicing the tenderloin for either a breakfast biscuit or an evening meal. And there's nothing better than a crockpot full of onions and potatoes slow cooking with a venison ham. My mouth is watering as I type. Not only do we get to enjoy telling the stories of a successful solo harvest, but the results will bring some joyful refreshment for many others and for many months later. Pardon the pun, but I've been chewing on the this thought for several days now; the thought of how a seemingly devastating defeat or even a death brings about an even greater fruitfulness. As most of you know, I believe nature is not by accident. I don't believe God created something without purpose. I believe the Apostle Paul when he said that creation shows us God's invisible qualities, his eternal power, and his divine nature. That is, creation is a compass that points us to God. Now fast-forward to me and my deer. My deer died, but in dying became the source of joy for many others. And to this I am reminded of so many illustrations in the Bible about things like the crushing of grapes for wine, being crucifi ed with Christ, and even Jesus' prophecy concerning his crucifi xion. "I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives" (John 12:23-24 NIV) Some of you are in the prime of your life- not only physically, but spiritually. You have been producing great fruit and it seems that it's been a long time coming. But recently something has brought all of that to a halt. It seems everything you have worked for, or prayed for, or accomplished, has been crushed, or even put to death. You are not wrong. It has. But not so the rest of your life will be UNfruitful, but so it will be MORE fruitful. And while you can't see it right now and while it really does feel devastating, just remember, God is the one who is overseeing the process you are going through. He is perfect in his work and in his promises. Again, the Apostle Paul confi rmed this. "Being confi dent of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. SPORTS CORNER SPORTS CORNER The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission voted at its business meeting today to adopt eight proposed rules related to wildlife management for the 2023-24 seasons. The proposed fi sheries, game lands regulations for the 2023-24 seasons will be considered at an upcoming Commission meeting. Highlights of the rules adopted by Commissioners include: • Deer Either-Sex Seasons: Increased either-sex seasons on private lands in the following counties in the Western and Northwestern Zones: • Madison County will increase from a 1-day "introductory" to a 6-day "conservative" season (opening day through 1st Saturday). • Burke, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery and Caldwell counties will increase from a 6-day "conservative" to a 13- day "moderate" season (opening day through 2nd Saturday). • Polk, Rutherford and Cleveland counties will increase from a 2-week "moderate" to a 4-week season (opening day through 4th Saturday). • Wildlife C o n s e r v a t i o n Areas: Changed the dates and areas of restricted access on portions of Wildlife Conservation Areas that are posted as Waterbird Nesting Areas from April 1 through August 31, to March 1 through September 15 and prohibit open fi res. The proposals adopted were presented at three public hearings held across the state in January along with a fourth virtual hearing. During the public comment period, December 1, 2022 – January 30, 2023, the Wildlife Commission received input from constituents via email, an online comment portal, mail and at the virtual public hearing. Commissioners carefully reviewed each comment, prior to voting. The rules adopted at the February Commission meeting have an anticipated effective date of June 1. We had 27 anglers to fi sh in some cold and windy conditions. The water was 52- 55 degrees and basically pretty clear. Boat traffi c was low. Here are the tournament results: 1st place- The team of Doyle Hudson and Brian Branch with a 5 fi sh limit weighing 10.10 pounds. 2nd place- Russell Cook with a 5 fi sh limit weighing 8.99 pounds. 3rd place- The team of Stan Brackett and Chris Cross with a 5 fi sh limit weighing 8.52 pounds. 4th place- The team of Mason Merrill and Hunter Lynch with a 5 fi sh limit weighing 7.59 pounds. Stan Brackett won the big fi sh of the day award with a 4.43 pound largemouth. Brian Branch won the 2nd big fi sh of the day award with a 3.92 pound largemouth.
