BRING 2 BUYERS! ANTIQUE FURNITURE & SHOP EQUIPMENT/TOOL SOLD CONCURRENTLY! Upstairs Artspace in Tryon is presenting two new exhibitions through April 28 at its location at 49 South Trade Street. The exhibitions include Landscapes Abstracted: Artists Redefi ne Landscape, curated by Dale McEntire, including himself and fi ve other artists and Shedding Light: Art Lamps by Clark Ellefson. Among those featured is artist Lynne Tanner of Rutherfordton. In Carolina Arts, Tanner describes two of the series of paintings in the show as specifi c landscapes she has in her mind (A meadow above a house that she owned in upstate NY). She has been painting this scene for two or three years and the image has become more and more abstracted. "I look for and expand shapes and lines within the scene, going back into the painting over and over until an imaginary landscape has evolved." Tanner was born in New York City where she attended The Chapin School. It was there her love of painting began. She learned to create her own illuminated miniatures and manuscripts. The infl uence of this work still can be seen in her paintings. She graduated from Hollins University in Virginia with a bachelor's degree in biology and a minor in dance, and served as choreographer for the Rutherford County Arts Council for 50 years. She has painted professionally for 40 years. Her paintings and drawings have been exhibited in galleries including The Smithy Pioneer Gallery in Cooperstown, NY; the Art Museum of Spartanburg, SC; the Weatherspoon Art Museum and the Green Hill Center for the North Carolina Arts in Greensboro; and most recently in the 9th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Spartanburg County Public Library. About her work, she says: "These small pen and ink drawings, titled Scene From My Window, are renderings of the vista I see from my window each morning and again in the evening at sunset. I study the way the light plays across the tops of trees between my house and Hickory Nut Gorge, 30 miles away, how one minute it defi nes a mass of hardwoods, the next, casts them into shadow. It is this ever-changing vista that I love." Other featured artists in these shows include Cyrus Vance, Lori Heckelman, Caroline Young, Cindy Walton, Clark Ellefson, William Henry Price, Eric Benjamin, Keith Spencer. Upstairs Artspace is a 3,000 sq. ft. contemporary art gallery in Tryon that exhibits two and three-dimensional fi ne art and craft by leading artists from the Carolinas and the Southeast, and sometimes other parts of the US, in three gallery spaces. The exhibits, developed by an Exhibits Committee and guest curators, change every six weeks and often focus on a theme. Celebrating 45 years, Upstairs Artspace is an integral part of Tryon's venerable art history and is a force in the contemporary art scene. Tanner's work on exhibit in Tryon Article Provided By: Jean Gordon A public celebration of Jerry Richardson's life was held last Saturday on the campus of Wofford College in the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Bostic musician Seth Carson (right), on trumpet, and Gary McCraw, director of music at Wofford on the piano, performed "The Lord's Prayer" during the celebration. Richardson created the Carolina Panthers and held Wofford College close to his heart. He died on March 1, 2023 at age 86. Seth, the son of Jimmy and Becky Carson of Bostic, is also a member/director of Ol' 74 Jazz Band.
