The All Kids Bike Kindergarten Learn-to- Ride Program is a fl eet of 24 bikes, pedal conversion kits, helmets, one teacher instruction bike, and certifi ed curriculum teacher training, which is everything needed to teach kids how to progress from balance to riding a bike in 8 lessons at Spindale Elementary School. Funding for this program was made by Foothills Regional Commission, Safe Kids Rutherford-Polk, and Foothills Health District. "We are so excited to have Spindale Elementary be our fi rst ever All Kids Bike school in Rutherford County," said Jerry Stensland, Safe Routes to School Coordinator, Foothills Regional Commission. "The fi rst 'graduates' of the All Kids Bike program will also be the fi rst set of young riders we hope train throughout their school years through bike rodeos, events, education, and outings to be smart cyclists for life." Spindale will be the model for replicating the program at other schools. "It's so great to see the support the school Principal (Tamara) Black and the PE Teacher Ms.(Susan) Womick are putting into the program," Stensland added. For the past few weeks Womick and others at Spindale have been assembling the bicycles and getting them ready for the students. Before the training actually begins, there will be sessions for helmet fi tting and bike seat fi tting, Womick said. Over the spring break Womick said she will be studying the eight course program in its 36-page manual. "This program is really, really cool," she said. Before the children learn to pedal a bicycle they will learn to balance without the pedals during the fi rst fi ve lessons. "I am so excited," she continued. "This is will be a unit of study and what a joy. These children will learn a lifelong lesson and I love anything where there is life learning. You don't have to be a super athlete to do this." As the students return to school after the spring break on April 17, the course will begin. The three kindergarten classes will participate in the bike curriculum each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. for the eight sessions. Lisa Weyer, Executive Director of the Strider Education Foundation explains, "The ability to ride a bike develops physical and mental well-being and instills confi dence which can lead to better focus in the classroom. Kindergarten is the perfect age to teach kids to ride a bike focusing on gross motor skills, balance, and coordination. By teaching bike riding at the entry-level in a public school system, we are providing the knowledge and a positive foundation of a lifelong skill." At Spindale the program will teach approximately 60 kindergarten students how to ride a bike on an annual basis. With the equipment lifespan of 7-10 years, this will impact up to 600 kids over the next decade. All Kids Bike is a national movement led by the Strider Education Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 organization formed in 2017. The All Kids Bike Learn to Ride Program was launched in 2018 and is actively running in over 900 schools in all 50 states. Spindale is the fi rst of the Rutherford County Schools to be a part of the program.
