JERSEY SHORE HISTORY
The Opening of the
Point Pleasant Canal
and The Closing of the
Manasquan Inlet
by Jeff Heim and Jerry Woolley
W
hen the Point Pleasant Canal was opened in 1925, upper Barnegat Bay
was transformed from a stable fresh water environment to a salt water bay
with tides and currents. On the Manasquan River side, as a result of the newly
moving river waters, the Manasquan Inlet shoaled and closed solid for several
years. A massive public works project reopened the Inlet and built its first jetties.
The Lovelandtown Bridge crosses the Canal at Bridge Avenue in Point Pleasant.
