The necessity for forgiveness naturally fl ows from our humanity. None of us can say that we have never wronged someone or that we have never been transgressed against. Therefore, a forgiving spirit should be a constant in our life. Without it, we will harbor feelings of bitterness and hate. One author compared an unforgiving person to a person who lives in their own self-constructed prison. Just the mention of the word sometimes will reveal past hurts and abuses. We are all guilty of hanging onto past wounds and not letting them go. It could be something terrible or in comparison a small trespass, but we all at times are haunted by the ill actions of another or our own personal failure. Unforgiveness is like a thief who steals our life and drains us of our ability to look forward with hope. The secret to forgiveness is found in a redemptive relationship with God. Those who place saving faith in Jesus Christ and receive forgiveness of their sins, are then given the grace to forgive others as they have been forgiven (Ephesians 4:32). One of the greatest proofs of our love for God and a love for others is found in the act of forgiving. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the prison doors of guilt, shame, resentment and animosity. There is nothing in this life more freeing than to experience the power of God's forgiveness and in turn forgiving others of their wrongdoing.
