20 Red Bluff 2023 Victorian Charm An Italianate Victorian home built circa 1880 by sheep and cattle rancher Sidney Allen Griggs, at the intersection of Washington and Ash Streets in Red Bluff, later sold to the pioneer ranching Kelly family in 1931. The Kelly-Griggs House Museum Association became a non-profit organization for education in June of 1965 after a group of prominent citizens discovered Miss Anne Kelly, the last remaining sibling, planned to sell her house, and purchased it, with Miss Anne carrying the mortgage. Thanks to the AAUW, the local newspaper and the efforts and generosity of hundreds of community members and organizations, the house opened for tours in 1969 after four years of hands-on and mostly volunteer restoration. Local families donated valuable antique furnishings, pioneer portraits and artwork for the Victorian styled rooms. This included beautiful artifacts used by Native Americans from north state tribes. Tireless fundraising efforts and lots of hard work resulted in the mortgage payoff in 1976. Today, the Museum Association is once again focused on raising funds for restoration and preservation of this historic Red Bluff treasure for future generations, especially school children. Local high school students donate community service hours at the museum throughout the year. Kelly Guides lead all visitors on tours and stories have been passed down by experienced volunteers. Presentations and programs are offered featuring professional antiquities consultants, local historians, crafters, artists and authors. These educational programs are open to the public and are often specific to Tehama County history and items in the museum collection. Late summer brings the annual ice cream social, a tradition enjoyed now for generations. Visit the museum at 311 Washington St., Red Bluff. Guided Tours are 1-3 p.m. Sundays and Thursdays.
