To help protect the underground aquifer and the water supply wells from potential contamination, the Town of Owensville has developed a Wellhead Protection (WHP) Plan. The WHP Plan focuses on public awareness, education, spill preven- tion and reporting. For your refer- ence, a copy of Owensville's WHP Plan is available at the Town Hall ( 103 S. Main Street, Owensville, IN). Educational brochures are available at the Town Hall or on the website at https://www.owensville. org/wellhead protection/. The Local Planning Team (LPT) held an annual WHP meeting on February 9, 2023, to discuss revisions to the WHP Plan, public education, and pollution prevention efforts. This year, Owensville will focus on notifying operators of oil and gas wells within the WHP area. Additionally, the Town will notify the Gibson County Health Department, Gibson County Coal, and the Indiana Department of Transportation regarding pollution prevention efforts. Water, oil, and gas wells that become damaged or are no longer used are a potential conduit for surface contamination to reach the groundwater and contaminate our drinking water source. Additionally, inactive wells should be plugged to ensure the well does not allow oil/ gas to discharge to the ground, does not pose a threat to public health or safety, or interfere with agricul- tural uses of the land. The Town is working to identify the location of wells and determine whether these wells are active, inactive, or aban- doned. The landowner is ultimately responsible for the proper plugging of an inactive well. If you have a well on your property and/or seal a well, please contact the Owensville Town Hall at (812) 724- 4151 so that it can be added to a tracking database. Below are some tips to help you protect our drinking water source: • Recycle used oil, automotive fluids, batteries, and other products. Don't dispose of hazardous prod- ucts in toilets, storm drains, waste- water systems, creeks, alleys, or the ground. This pollutes the water supply. Contact the Gibson County Solid Waste District for recycling and disposal locations (812-385-3 136) or visit their website at https:// www.gibsoncountysolidwaste. com/. • Reduce the amount of fertiliz- ers, pesticides, or other hazardous chemicals you use. Buy only what you need so you do not have to dis- pose of leftovers. Read labels and follow all directions on household chemicals and other hazardous products used around your home. • Use organic lawn and garden alternatives that do not contain synthetic chemical poisons. • Properly plug and abandon wa- ter wells that are no longer in use. Contact a licensed well driller for assistance. Informational brochures are available at the Town Hall or on the website. • If you have a septic system, have it serviced regularly. lnfor- mational brochures are available at Town Hall or on the website. • Check your car, boat, motorcy- cle and other machinery for leaks and spills. Place drip pans under leaking vehicles/equipment and make repairs as soon as possible. Clean up spills with absorbent ma- terial. such as kitty litter or cloths. Do not allow spills to soak into the ground. Do not rinse spills with water. Drinking water protection is the responsibility of all residents. The WHP Plan will ensure that a clean water source is available for our community's current needs and a supply is preserved for future generations. 2.28.2023 hspaxlp LEGALS SUBSCRIBE TODAY! 812-753-3553 We're not afraid to shed some light on the truth.
