Tony Spencer began his almost 40 years ministry at the First Baptist Church in Forest City in 1982, I was already in the business of writing news. I was among those who had the privilege to know him, having met him through my work in the beginning. There were times during those years when he had a story idea for the people of Forest City and Rutherford County or was the subject of stories. I also had the honor of hearing him preach, seeing him as he led music at church and numerous community events including the Thanksgiving services downtown. I observed the faithful leader he was to some of my family and friends. He was one of those people who made a difference in the lives of the church, the people of Forest City, Rutherford County, the Carolinas and beyond. Tony passed away on February 11, 2023 after an illness of a couple of years. He was one of those people, as it was so appropriately said last week at his Service of Worship in Celebration of the Resurrection and Thanksgiving, who had already preached his sermon, living out his life as a servant of the Lord. Rev. Clyde Buckner told an overfl ow congregation Tony instructed him not to deliver a sermon, since it had already been preached. "Today's sermon is one Tony has lived out in front of us," Buckner said. Before Tony's wife Becky and their children Meredith and Charles, Buckner said Tony was allowed to grow in the church over the years just as the congregation grew. "Tony was respected not only as a minister and musician but as an incredible human being," Buckner said Buckner said Tony was admired, respected and trusted and loved over the state and region as he participated in many statewide meetings, conferences and other music clinics. "He did you proud. He made his Lord proud," he said. So many people paying their respects at the service last Wednesday were parents of "children he raised" at First Baptist. Others attending and singing in the choir were children or young people who had the opportunity to be under his faithful and loving leadership along the journey. Buckner said Tony earned the respect of teenagers by "shooting straight with them" and being there when they needed him and always expecting their best. "We're not in the concert business, we're in the redemption business," Buckner said Tony told him many years ago while sitting in Buckner's offi ce. He introduced kids and young people to Jesus because of his own redemption story. Buckner said people could be angry and mad at the seemingly "unfair" disease that claimed Tony's life. But Buckner said Tony wanted to make sure as he faced the illness with his family, that his walk along the tough road would validate and not negate what he had spent his "entire life teaching." Buckner said the congregation and community are witnesses that the devil never came close to winning that battle with Tony and his family. "He showed us how the people of God deal and face adversity...and that will probably be his biggest legacy to all of us." "Well done thou good and faithful servant. Tony Spencer is alive and well today," Buckner concluded. Those who had the privilege of walking part of the journey with Tony and his family are better people today for having known him.
