Page 4 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 Thursday, February 23-March 1, 2023 The 15th annual Evening of Honors recognition dinner and awards ceremony was held Friday, Feb. 10, at the Lake House Restaurant in Lake Lure with awards announced and presented by Police Chief Sean Humphries. Awards were presented to offi cers, fl ight team and dive team members in the community. Sergeant Glen Gittens, who was not present for the ceremony, was awarded with the Distinguished Service Award, given to offi cers in recognition for excelling at departmental goals and expectations. Sergeant Gittens received this distinguished award for working with the Lake Lure Police Department for 16 years. During this time he established himself as a vital member of the department, said Humphries. This award was sponsored by the Todd and Melinda Morse. Offi cer Kortney Burrell received the Community Service Award given to offi cers whose contributions to the community go above and beyond expectations. Offi cer Burrell was key to the department during an eight month span where they were short staffed. Her time working alone was roughly doubled, meaning her vacation time was reduced and she gave up many training hours, never complaining. This award was sponsored by Brad and Jaimee Peters of the. Lake Lure Marina Corporal Aaron Collins was presented the Citation of Bravery Award, recognizing his acts of valor and compassion in protecting and serving the community. Corporal Collins was awarded this award based on a case in which individuals stole 833 gallons of diesel fuel from Ingles. The suspects returned in the early morning hours. Corporal Collins was working this shift by himself when he was alerted by 911 Communications that the suspects had returned. Corporal Collins arrested both individuals by himself. These two were later confi rmed to be known gang members out of South Carolina. Corporal Collins led an extensive investigation which led to convictions on many felony charges. This award was sponsored by Bob and Pam Keith. Flight Team offi cer Chris Shuford and Dive Team offi cers Aaron Collins, Kortney Burrell and Tyler Dills received the Community Support Award, given in recognition for specialized support to the department and community. These offi cers stepped up and were willing to put in the time and training in an effort for the department to create these much specialized divisions. The dive team was needed for recovering vehicles and boats and the unfortunate possibility of body recovery. The fl ight Team utilizes a drone and the department believes it is vital in search and rescue in the rugged mountain terrain, among other advantages drones can provide for a department. These awards were sponsored by Russell and Lynn Carnes Pitts. The Lake Lure Police Department also expressed their appreciation to the Lake House Restaurant for their dedication to the department in continuing this important awards ceremony and welcoming them as well as the town year after year.
