Not Just Oil, Pennzoil FAST FAST FAST FAST WAY WAY WAY WAY LET US DO YOUR DIRTY WORK! KIDS' CORNER BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Decorated by the hands of small children, our Valentine mailboxes were either taped or pinned around a table in my fi rst grade classroom. For about a week, if I remember correctly, the students in Mary Hutchins' fi rst grade would put Valentine cards in the mailboxes of friends and were opened on Valentine's Day. Our grade mothers also came to school that day with Valentine cupcakes and red punch. When it came time to open our mailbox/ envelopes they were passed around the room by our grade mothers. Thinking about that day, I remember a lot of anticipation as to what might be in our stuffed envelopes. I was anxious to get into my cards to see how many I received. I can't remember if every student put a card in every envelope, but I hope so. No one wanted to be left out especially on that day. When I asked 9-year- old Lucy about Valentine's Day for this week's Street Talk she said she doesn't have a "sweetheart" but she loves the day because people seem to be kinder. Another person answered she liked the day because people seem to be more giving. I loved those answers. Florists will be overwhelmed, fudge shops will no doubt make a lot of Valentine fl avors, boxes of candy will be bought up and Valentine cards will be delivered. No doubt social media will tell the love stories of many. We have an opportunity next Tuesday, February 14 to show love and kindness to all those we know and even the strangers we see on the street. We can express love to our sweethearts, children, grandchildren, friends and the down and out. Valentine's Day was not originated as a romantic holiday but sometimes we tend to think that's all it is about. Plenty of people aren't in relationships, others might be living in a town all alone or may be grieving the death of a spouse, a close family member or friend who passed on since last February 14. I love what Lucy said about Valentine's Day being a day for kindness. We can all show a little more kindness, especially to those who feel so alone on February 14 and often wish the day would disappear. We don't have to give expensive roses, fl owers, cards or even boxes of candy to our favorite sweetheart. What about giving free smiles? A smile goes a long way when given freely and with love. We might not change everything, but we might change the way someone feels that day. What about a smile for those who are overwhelmed by the problems they face every day and won't go away? Everyone we meet is facing something and rather than ignore them, give them a smile. Show kindness by handing out those little boxes of candy hearts with messages on them. There might be a message someone needs to read that very day. Although we have no idea what is going on in the life of a person, smiling just might be the encouragement they need at the very moment we see them. Have a great day giving.
