Park Square Depot, which will serve as the future home for the Rutherford County Farmers Market through a partnership with Rutherford Building Agricultural Relationships Now (BARN), was funded through donations from several local foundations, as well as a $300,000 gift from Meta which was announced during the Council meeting. "Through support from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, the Rutherford County Tourism Development Authority, and the RHI Legacy Foundation, the Town of Forest City has previously identifi ed $1,475,000 in grant funds for the construction of the Park Square Depot. With this generous contribution from Meta, the Town of Forest City is prepared to move forward with this project. We are grateful for Meta's continued investment in our community," said Janet Mason, Forest City Town Manager. Park Square Depot will provide a multi-purpose space offering a year-round variety of recreational, educational, and marketing opportunities to Rutherford County citizens and visitors. The structure will be located adjacent to the Thermal Belt Rail Trail at the Oak Street and Park Square intersection, and will also allow the Farmers Market to expand the number of vendors and offerings to customers. Additionally, a new commercial-grade community kitchen led by Rutherford BARN and sponsored by Meta will offer demonstration and instructional space, separate food prep and hand wash sinks, and roll- up garage doors to make the facility operational in all four seasons. "Park Square Depot started with a vision to create a new home for the Rutherford County Farmers Market back in 2019. Over time and through conversations with our community, it has evolved into a space we'll be able to use for our market and so much more," said Mayor Steve Holland. "Since breaking ground on the Forest City Data Center in 2010, Meta has proudly invested in projects and partnerships that support the long-term vitality of this community," said Tara Tenorio, community development manager at Meta. "We're honored to share in this special moment for The Town of Forest City and Rutherford BARN as they bring Park Square Depot to life. From educational opportunities for students to the platform it provides for small businesses to grow, we believe this will be a highly valuable resource." The Town of Forest City expects to release the Park Square Depot project for bids now that funding for the project has been awarded, and to begin construction in the spring.
