This year's theme was Community, Vocations, Families, Students, and Staff. Odds are your chil- dren or perhaps someone you know has children who attend one of South Gibson's three Catholic schools, includ- ing St. James Catholic School (Haubstadt), Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School (Haub- stadt) or Holy Cross Catholic School (Fort Branch). A different theme was designated each day, and stu- dents were to dress appropri- ately for that day's theme. Tuesday, Jan. 31 was "Our future is bright and full of great vocations." Students were to wear neon or bright- ly colored clothing and sun- glasses. On Friday, Februar y 3, students were to dress as their favorite teacher or staff member. As you can imagine, students' outfits can get pretty comical. St. P&P Principal Megan Howington said, "Catholic Schools Week is full of theme days and activities. Students look for ward to dressing up each year. This year, students are really excited about our 'Anything but a Backpack' day. Students ditched their backpacks for the day and brought their school supplies in 'anything but a backpack.' This week was not just a time to play dress-up, howev- er. On Jan. 30, each student at Sts. Peters and Paul Catholic School was asked to bring in a one dollar donation to support South Gibson's Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Stu- dents of Life organizations. Many students involved in these organizations at the high school were once Sts. P&P Stars. St. James Catholic School sponsored its Annual Canned Food Drive that benefited St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantr y. While the spirit was all about giving, there is nothing wrong with a little healthy competi- tion. Each class battled to see which one could bring in the most cans. The winning class would receive a "Free Dress" for a future date. Finally, Thursday, Feb. 2 was "Come and See" night at St. James Catholic School and Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School. New families consid- ering a Catholic school edu- cation for their children were invited to tour the schools and meet with teachers and staff. South Gibson's schools are some of the best schools in the area and its area Catho- lic schools contribute greatly to that record of excellence, both in and out of the class- room. This special week cel- ebrated the families, staff and community that mold our youngest people into the best versions of themselves. "We feel blessed that we get to pray, attend Mass, talk about Christ, and spread the Gospel, all while helping our students reach their academic potential too," said Howington.
