KAB inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. Established in 1953, Keep America Beautiful strives to End Littering, Improve Recycling and Beautify America's Communities. "We are proud to see Keep Rutherford County Beautiful making litter, beautifi cation and recycling a priority," stated Mallory Coffey, Director of Affi liate Development at Keep America Beautiful®. "Becoming an affi liate is an extensive process, only undertaken by those who understand the commitment needed to create a cleaner, greener and more beautiful community for the future." The KAB organization believes everyone has a right to live in a clean, green and beautiful community, and shares a responsibility to contribute to that vision. The organization is driven by the work and passion of more than 700 Keep America Beautiful affi liates, millions of volunteers, and the collaborative support of corporate partners, social and civic service organizations, academia, municipalities, elected offi cials, and individuals. Jenna Bailey, executive director of Keep Rutherford County Beautiful said, "What started as litter induced road rage six years ago has turned into a movement I could have never realized by myself." Bailey said, after the county's fi rst few litter sweeps it was apparent the combined efforts were just part of a bigger solution. "With a team of dedicated volunteers, partnership with Rutherford Outdoor Coalition and fi nancial backing from the Tourism Development Authority, the County and local municipalities, we grew to incorporate student focused programs and awareness campaigns," Bailey said. "Now that we have joined the network of 700 other Keep America Beautiful affi liates, we are looking forward to the benefi t of their experience, to connect with and learn from them." She said other aspirations are to add beautifi cation projects, run existing programs more effi ciently and obtain grants that support the mission. "This milestone will support us now and what we aim to become and it is very exciting," she added. (Contributed photo) Do you have a rising sixth or seventh grader who dreams of playing basketball on a college campus? Rutherford EMC is once again partnering with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and N.C. State University to make that dream a reality for two lucky students. Through the Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship program, Rutherford EMC will provide one young woman with a scholarship to attend the Wolfpack Women's Basketball Camp at N.C. State which will be held June 18-22. Young men can apply for a scholarship to attend the Carolina Basketball School which will be held June 17-21 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Basketball camp scholarships provide students with the once-in-a- lifetime opportunity to learn from acclaimed coaches and develop skills that will serve them on and off the court," said Dirk Burleson, General Manager at Rutherford EMC. The scholarships cover all expenses at the overnight camps, which provide a glimpse into life on a college campus. Campers stay overnight in dorms, learn fundamental skills that will help them excel as an individual and a team player as they receive instruction from Division 1 coaches to enhance their basketball and team-building abilities. To apply, students must complete and submit the online application by March 31. It can be found at www. ncelectriccooperatives.com/ sports-camps or on our website at www.remc.com. Eligible applicants must be in sixth or seventh grade during the 2023-2024 school year. "Athletic skill and talent are not bound by where you live or how much money you make," said N.C. State University Women's Basketball Coach Wes Moore. "Thanks to this partnership with North Carolina's Electric Cooperatives, we are able to help kids who otherwise wouldn't have been able to come to our camp, fi nd and discover their true potential." More than 50 students will be awarded Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarships from electric cooperatives in North Carolina. This scholarship program demonstrates the electric cooperatives' commitment to building a brighter future through continued support for education and community programs. Collectively, North Carolina's 26 independent electric cooperatives, including Rutherford EMC, power the lives of more than 2.5 million North Carolinians in 93 of our state's 100 counties. Rutherford EMC serves over 73,000 members in 10 of the state's 100 counties and maintains over 7,500 miles of power lines.
