In our county alone, the damages are esti- mated at upwards of $55 million. Community Bridges was one of many orga- nizations that stepped up to meet the needs of the community when evacuation warnings and orders were issued by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office. We walked door to door in Watsonville's old- er adult villages, and throughout the flooded areas of the San Lorenzo Valley to ensure that our community was educated about what these orders meant, and of the many resources available to them. We helped fill and deliver hundreds sandbags to the residents in Watsonville's older adult villages, coordi- nated and performed around 100 emergency evacuations transports through Lift Line, and hosted two flood recov- ery information sessions on opposite ends of the county, including one in the Pajaro Village Com- munity Room that was attended by more than 150 people. Now that the storm has passed and the evacua- tion orders and warn- ings have lifted, the road to recovery begins. We understand that weaving through this process can be compli- cated. Here are three tools we believe can put you on the right path. Contacting and Talking to Your In- surer Community Bridges hosted flood recovery information sessions via Zoom and in person on Jan. 12 and 13. Experts on insurance informa- tion and flood claims were present to answer questions, and we also connected attendees with resources available to them through our community partners. These meetings were essential for our flood-impacted commu- nity members because it gave them the tools and knowledge they need to speak to insurance com- panies, which is crucial to recovery. Here are three quick tips about what to do before cleaning up, filing a claim with your insurer, and seeking assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): 1) Take photos of your damaged home and belongings. 2) Make a list of dam- aged or lost items with dollar estimates. 3) If you have insurance, it is essential to read over your policy before calling to file a claim. To review Community Bridges' Zoom meetings, visit communitybridges. org/events. Applying for Federal Assistance President Biden autho- rized a major disaster declaration for Santa Cruz County on Jan. 14. The declaration is meant to assist local governments, nonprofits, families, and individuals in recovering from the storms. This may include financial assistance for cleanup and sanita- tion, repairs and other services for eligible households. Additional resources, including referral lists and legal aid, may be available. Apply for assistance from FEMA at disas- terassistance.gov, the FEMA smart phone app, or by calling (800) 621-3362. Community Bridges Free Tool Loan Pro- gram Community Bridges is providing cleanup tools and resources at our Family Resource Col- lective (FRC) locations to help our commu- nity recover from the devastating floods and mudslides produced by the recent unprecedent- ed winter storms.
