Lifetime makes that a reality Saturday, Jan. 28, with the premiere of "Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini." Jaime King ("Hart of Dixie") stars as the wife and mother who claimed to have been abducted while jogging and abused over several weeks. Her husband Keith (played by Matt Hamilton, of Lifetime's recent "Girl in Room 13") believed her, until evidence supported another scenario that devastated him, the community and those who had followed the nationally reported search for her. Papini vanished from Redding, Calif., early in November 2016 – prompting an investigation that came to involve the FBI as well as local authorities. She eventually resurfaced that Thanksgiving Day, maintaining she had been abducted and held by two Hispanic women, and branded on her right shoulder. Among sources probed by detectives were social-media profiles and emails ... and though DNA found on Papini didn't match that of her or her spouse, it was a match for a former boyfriend of hers, James Reyes. The probe and the story played out over several years, resulting in the March 2022 arrest of Papini for allegedly making false statements to federal law personnel and (for victim compensation she received after her return) for mail fraud. It was charged that she had stayed with Reyes during her absence, and that her injuries came from self- harm, rather than being inflicted by others. Though Papini faced as much as a 25-year sentence for the crimes she was accused of, she agreed to a plea deal in September 2022 that saw her admit to staging the hoax; she was given an 18-month prison term and a $300,000 fine. Her husband divorced her after she pleaded guilty to fraud, and he sought sole custody of their two children. "Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini" comes toward the end of Lifetime's latest run of new entries in its "Ripped From the Headlines" franchise, which generally are shown in successive weeks over month-long clusters. The latest wave began with "How to Murder Your Husband: The Nancy Brophy Story" (starring Cybill Shepherd and Steve Guttenberg) and "Bad Behind Bars: Jodi Arias" (with Celina Sinden), and it wraps up on Feb. 4 with "Gwen Shamblin: Starving for Salvation" (featuring Jennifer Grey). Since Lifetime films tend to repeat fairly often – both on the parent network and sister outlet LMN – the story of Sherri Papini is likely to be kept alive in movie form for some time to come. In that sense, it's a "Hoax" that won't go away anytime soon.
