Ariana Hunter, an R-S Central High School science and biology teacher, and the other fi nalists were chosen because of their dedication, innovation, and ability to inspire students to achieve. "I am extremely excited and honored to have been chosen as one out of 27 fi nalists for the state of North Carolina as Beginning Teacher of the Year," Ariana said. "I have always known that I wanted to be a teacher, as school was a safe place for me as a student, and I never wish to stop learning. My desire as a teacher is, and will always be, to create an environment where students feel safe, comfortable, and eager to learn," she said. Ariana said some of the teachers that she has had in the past played a huge role in the person and professional she is today. "Because of this, I strive to leave a positive impact on each student that I meet and to encourage them to be the best that they can be," Arianna said. " R e p r e s e n t i n g Rutherford County in this process is something that I will always cherish and I am blessed to have even made it this far," she said. " With the support of my colleagues and administrators, I hope to earn the title as the 2023 NCCAT Empower Beginning Teacher of the Year." The winner will be announced on March 9 at the NCCAT Cullowhee Campus. The winner will receive the 2023 NCCAT Empower Beginning Teacher of the Year award. "We appreciate the enthusiastic response from all over the state for the Beginning Teacher of the Year Award," said NCCAT Executive Director M. Brock Womble. "These fi nalists provide a snapshot of the lasting impact great teachers have on our students from the fi rst to the last day they step into a North Carolina public school. We are excited about this opportunity to honor teachers for the important work they do in our state." The NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year will receive $5,000 in cash; participation in a GoGlobal NC trip in 2024, instructional supply funds for the teacher's school. The runner-up will receive a $2,000 cash prize. Finalists will receive travel expenses and substitute costs for regional fi nalists to participate in NCCAT. We are so fortunate that she chose Rutherford County Schools to begin her teaching career. We know Ariana will represent us well as she moves on to the regional competition."
