That's what Turner Classic Movies hope viewers will do throughout January, as each Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, the channel offers a group of films centering around car chases. In some cases, the pursuit is just one element of the given picture ... while in others, the chase is the entire reason the movie exists. Here's a look at some highlights of the literally fast-paced festival. "Bullitt" (1968; Wednesday, Jan. 4): Appropriately first in the TCM car-chase tribute, this police melodrama boasts one of the all-time-greatest sequences of that nature, putting title star Steve McQueen in a cat-and-mouse game with killers who apparently took out a trial witness he was meant to guard. "Smokey and the Bandit" (1977, Jan. 11): In effect one lengthy car chase from the start to the end of the movie, the Burt Reynolds hit that gave the genre new life – with plenty of comedy mixed in – casts the star as the Trans Am-driving Bandit, who picks up a runaway bride (Sally Field) and tries to evade a determined lawman (Jackie Gleason) while attempting to transport a cargo of beer illegally across state lines. "The French Connection" (1971; Jan. 12): New York cop Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) commandeers a car – and hits various objects (and almost a baby-carriage pusher) en route – to chase a European drug dealer's deputy, who has escaped aboard an elevated train, in director William Friedkin's exciting and Oscar-winning drama inspired by an actual case. Producer Philip D'Antoni also made the aforementioned "Bullitt." Following this will be this film's Roy Scheider in the last of D'Antoni's three car-chase classics, "The Seven-Ups." "The Blues Brothers" (1980; Jan. 18). Famous for the number of vehicles destroyed – just over 100 – during production in and around Chicago, this comedy surrounding musicians Jake and Elwood Blues (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, in roles that they made famous on "Saturday Night Live") is particularly known for a sequence that takes the so-called Bluesmobile and pursuing police cars through a shopping mall.
