Let me be one of the fi rst to wish each of you a healthy and happy 2023. We say good-bye to 2022 and refl ect on the old times - the days past as we repeat the words of the Scottish poem "Auld Lang Syne." The past year brought its share of joy, laughter, challenges, some struggles and even traveling to a new part of the country for me. Because I trust in the Lord, have family and friends, I am among the most blessed on earth. I entered the new 70- age bracket in 2022 and believe me it's thought provoking. So grateful to have lived to this age and look forward to many more days. Each day of life is a gift. So what will I resolve to do in 2023. I have to tell you I am not among the millions of people who make New Year's resolutions. Oh, I have made some resolutions but nothing terribly serious and rarely did the resolution last past February. Like the majority of resolution makers, I said I'd exercise more, lose some weight, get more organized, etc. Some of us promise to learn a new hobby or a new skill and we stick to that resolution until we've reached our goal. We might resolve to live life to the fullest, complain less and spend more time with family, friends and to be more inclusive for those who are alone. New Year's resolutions are made to spark positive changes over the last year. If 2022 wasn't what we had hoped, we can always try again, set another goal and reach for the sky. One resolution I'll make is spend more time with friends, family and say the words often, I Love You. New Year's resolution must start with a mental attitude — as most things do. We can't accomplish much with a negative attitude. As a pre-teen I was a huge fan of The King Family. They appeared on television in an hour- long entertainment show every Saturday night. I remember them singing, "Half the battle is winning the war and the other half is picking up the pieces and starting all over again." We might say half the battle is won when we fi nally settle on a paint color and can actually begin the paint job. Picking up the pieces of a wrong choice or decision lets us move forward. We can pick up the pieces and start again, a vital step to moving toward achieving something. We can spark a positive change in our routine day that could rub off on another. While so many of our resolutions might wear off with the excitement of a fresh new year such as exercising or getting rid of a bad habit, some we need to stick with if we're going to make a difference in 2023. Changing an attitude could be at the top of a list. Smiling more is good exercise and improves our physical health. We can try our best to live at peace with all. Thousands of years ago the Apostle Paul told us, "if it is possible, as far as it depends on us, live at peace with everyone." (Romans 12:18) We can't change people, but we can change us. We don't have to be right all the time, even if we know beyond a shadow of a doubt we are, it is better to walk away. As diffi cult as it is, honestly we don't have to have the last word. We are all different with many opinions, that's a great thing, but we can agree to disagree. So in 2023 across Rutherford County — we can brighten the corner where we are. We can change the world, where we are and make a difference to those we see on the streets. Give a smile and if possible, offer to help others. So as Another Year is Dawning - Dear Lord What Can It be? Perhaps we can work harder and do our part to make a difference in this part of the world. Happy New Year!
