The New York Press Associa- tion's contest has been a tradi- tion in New York state since 1930. It's designed to measure papers of similar size against one an- other in categories such as news, photography, and advertising. Approximately 4,000 entries are received each year. The contest is especially sig- nificant because it reflects the diverse accomplishments of local newspapers, from editorials and investigative reporting to spot news photography, graphic de- sign, obituaries, innovative ad projects and special sections. This past year, there were 67 categories, as well as catego- ries for Newspaper of the Year, the Stuart C. Dorman Award for Editorial Excellence and the John J. Evans Award for Advertising Excellence. The most prestigious award of all, the Newspaper of the Year, is award- ed each year on the final night of the spring convention. Last year's winner was The Highlands Current. This year, we presented 396 awards across all those categories. The first place winners are present- ed with plaques, and second and third place winners are given certificates. S pring may seem far away as the cold winds beat against your office windows this December, but the season of tulips, green grass and the New York Press Association's Spring Convention and Trade Show will be here before you know it. Before long,we'll be together in Alba- ny honoring the good work you've all done this year. That process, which ends with distri- bution of awards at our March 31-April 1 convention in Albany, begins now as you begin assembling your submissions to our Better Newspaper Contest. Submitting to contests takes time, I know, and there never seems to be enough time in the newspaper world. But there's a lot of good work out there that deserves recognition and I hope to see the entries flood in as December comes to an end.
