On a cool autumn evening in November, The Foothills Farm to Fork Trail nonprofi t organization hosted a Cider & Sliders fundraising to help Polk County High School students with scholarships. The event was at Caitlyn Farms off Highway 108 in Mill Spring about 12 miles from Rutherfordton. The mission of the nonprofi t group is focused on supporting agritourism in the Isothermal area of North Carolina. The group plans to initiate, develop and expand agritourism in the foothills region of North Carolina including Polk, Rutherford and other western NC counties, while enhancing local traditions and creating new opportunities within the agriculture communities. Money raised from Cider & Sliders will provide scholarships for students studying agriculture sustainability and hospitality. Kelly Elliott, president of The Foothills Farm to Fork Trail, welcomed guests from Polk and Rutherford counties and other areas. Through fundraising efforts there are $2,500 scholarships per year for two Polk County High School students graduating in 2023. Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing education in hospitality, agriculture or sustainability fi elds of study. One scholarship will go for a two year fi eld of study, community college bound and one for a four year fi eld of study. Funds are to be used toward tuition, books, tech materials at colleges/universities to support advancement in their outlined fi eld of study. The mission of the Foothills Farm to Fork Trail is to serve the Carolina Foothills region of the Blue Ridge Mountains in ways that enhance local farming traditions while creating new opportunities and also to promote consumer awareness of our agriculture-related producers and their partner restaurants and retailers in ways of fresh food dining while encouraging and preserving small food sources. The afternoon and evening event included live music, a silent auction, games, local cider and a food truck. Other fundraisers will be held in the future for the scholarship program.
