Wreaths Across America began in 1992 in Maine when Mr. Morrill Worces- ter had extra wreaths near the end of the holiday sea- son and decided to donate them to Arlington Nation- al Cemetery. In the years following, Mr. Worcester's program was expanded nationwide, and today, there are over 2,000 loca- tions that participate. Wreaths are placed on the grave of a veteran to honor them for their sacri- fi ces made to preserve our freedoms. The Wreaths Across America's mission is to "Remember, Honor, and Teach." Remember the fallen. Honor those who served. And Teach fu- ture generations. The live wreaths with beautiful red bows are shipped from Maine, and will be delivered to Shelby on Dec. 16. A brief pro- gram will be held on Sat- urday, Dec. 17, at 10 a.m., at the Boys and Girls Club. There will be a guest speaker and ceremonial placing of wreaths at this program. Afterwards, vol- unteers from the Shelby American Legion Family and the community will then place wreaths on the graves of veterans in both Sunset and Webb cem- eteries. Individuals may also order a wreath to be picked up to take to a veteran in another resting place. Wreaths cost $15, and the local program coordi- nator, Rebecca Higgins, reiterated that this year's deadline to order wreaths is Nov. 21. Please send an email to wreaths4shel- by@gmail.com for more information and to place your order. Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to assist in the honor of placing wreaths in this wonderful program honoring fallen veterans. The grave marker of Miss Emma Eunice Hoyle and Warren F. Hoyle. Shelby's Legion Post and Auxiliary Post 82 is named in his honor ("The Warren Finley Hoyle American Legion"). Warren was a Shelby native, and was killed in combat in World War I. He was the fi rst combat casualty from Cleveland County. His body is actually buried in France, but his family wanted to keep his memory alive in Shelby so they added his name on the tombstone. Miss Emma Hoyle was Warren's sister, and she died six months after her brother. Her cause of death was the Spanish Flu. (This in- formation was provided by Martha G. Bridges, Post 82 Commander.)
