SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, Nov. 14 and 18, 1947 Closing of Mine Leaves 200 Idle: The King's mine fire and explosion Monday closed the mine for at least sixty to ninety days and left more than 200 worker idle before the Christmas season. The deepest mine is Indiana, King's mine had a fire and an explosion followed, causing the mine to be sealed. The fire began at 10 a.m. Monday in the main en- try after an electrically powered tow- car leaped the rails and overturned, short-circuiting electric wires. The fire appeared to be under control but a series of three explosions rocked the area in the early evening. The en- tire working shift escaped without injury. Many workers were not pres- ent because of the beginning of the hunting season. Henry P. Smith, of Terre Haute, owner of the mine, said it would take at least sixty days to smother the blaze. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Nov. 15, 1962 Rogers Bridge Claims Three More Lives: Three men were killed in a truck-automobile accident at the Rog- ers bridge two miles north of Peters- burg on highway 57 Monday morn- ing. The wreck occurred at 8:30 a. m. during a rain. The truck involved in the accident was the large, green coal truck seen daily making trips through Pike county from Washing- ton to the Enos Coal Co. mine. Frank Bruner, driver of the truck, hauled coal for the City Light and Power Company of Washington. The pas- senger car involved in the accident was driven by James Leonard Fer- guson, 20, of Evansville. Riding with Ferguson at the time of the accident was Frederick Johnson, 16, also of Evansville. It appeared that the Fer- guson crossed the center line and was about three and half feet over the center line at the time of the crash. The loaded coal truck went off the west side of the highway and caught fire when it hit the bottom of the em- bankment. Authorities said internal injuries and a skull fracture killed Mr. Bruner instantly. The Passen- ger car was partly covered with coal. State Trooper Ray Ham of Washing- ton said the driver was found dead and the passenger lived only a short time following the accident. The pas- senger car traveled 173 feet from the point of impact and was sitting diag- onally across the center line of the highway. Wreckers had to pry loose the twisted parts of steel before the bodies could be removed.
