SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, Oct. 17 and 21, 1947 "Meatless Tuesday" Up To Individual In Petersburg: The observance of "Meatless Tues- day" was left almost entirely to the discretion of the individual in Petersburg this week. Most restaurants continued to have meat listed on the menu. Some menus offered several substi- tutes for meat if the individu- al so desired. Halloween Parade Set For Friday, October 31, City Mer- chants To Give Prizes For Cos- tumes: The parade will begin from the Presbyterian church on Main Street promptly at 7:00 and move down Main Street to the Index Store where it will cross to Walnut Street and up to the School Athletic Field. White Lead In Paint: Prac- tically all of the light colored paints for outside surfac- es contain white lead, usual- ly mixed with smaller quanti- ties of other pigments. Origi- nally white lead meant basic carbonate of lead, but with- in recent years the term has been applied also to basic lead sulphate, originally called sub- limed white lead. Free of Tariff: Sixty percent of foreign goods enter this country free of tariff duties. Dutiable goods from abroad paid average tariffs of only 25 percent last year. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Oct. 18, 1962 Pike Soybean Crop Infest- ed With Fungus: Many of Pike County soybean crops have a heavy infestation of the fun- gus disease known as Downy Mildew. New Post Office Will Be Dedicated Sunday: Lynnville's new post office will be dedicat- ed at 2 p.m. on Oct. 21, 1962, Postmaster Amel Siebe has announced. Power Plant to Clear Ground for Survey: David E. Schnorr, assistant secretary, and Allen E. Benson, chief engineer of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company met with the Pike county commissioners. The power company intends to let a contract soon for the clearing of 100 acres of ground at the construction site. The ground is being cleared to permit contour surveys to be made. Married 50 Years: Mr. and Mrs. Irvin C. Bell of Winslow celebrated their golden wed- ding anniversary Sunday. Ir- vin and Lola Gooch Bell were married on Oct. 15, 1912 in In- dianapolis. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Oct. 19, 1972 Wed 67 Years: Mr. and Mrs. Frate Burdette of near Coe will quietly observe their 67th wedding anniversary, Satur- day October 22, at their home near the New Liberty Church in Monroe Township. The Bur- dettes, who were married Oc- tober 21, 1905, have seven children, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Miss Kathy Gilliland: Kathy Gilliland has been chosen to represent Otwell High School in the Good Citizen contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Kathy, an OHS senior, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan- iel Gilliland of Algiers. Outstanding Teacher: James R. Dougan, English teacher in the Cayuga schools and son of Mrs. Elsworth Mc- Cord of Oakland City, has been chosen as one of Amer- ica's Outstanding teachers of 1972, by directors of outstand- ing teachers of America. To Receive Scout Award: Keith Robling, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Robling of Vincennes and grandson of the late Elmer M. and Margie (Miley) Robling, will be pre- sented the God and Country Scout award from his pastor, the Rev. E. E. Turner of the First Christian Church in Vin- cennes. The award along with a special flag and a certificate from Congressman Roger Zi- on, who will be a special guest, will be presented during the morning worship service, Sun- day, October 22. 50th Wedding Anniversa- ry: Mr. and Mrs. Royal (Ma- rie) Pancake will celebrate their 50th anniversary at their home in Petersburg on Octo- ber 22. They were married on October 18, 1922. They are members of the First Church of God. They are the parents of five children and have 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. John Fowlers Buy Wer- ner Shoe Store: Mr. and Mrs. John Fowler, of Bowman, pur- chased the stock and busi- ness of Werner's Shoe Store and took over active manage- ment of the business Monday of this week. The Werner Shoe Store was the oldest business in Petersburg, under the same ownership, having been in the Werner family over 50 years, dating back to 1921. Winner of Flag: Ann Foust became the proud owner of the flag she won by registering at the ASCS Tent at the Indiana State Fair. Harold C. W. Hage- meyer, CED, of Pike County, made the presentation at Pe- tersburg High School. The flag had flown over the Capital at Washington, D.C., and was given to ASCS by Congress- man John Myers. Ann is the daughter of Larry and Judy Foust of Petersburg. She is 13 years old, and an eighth grade student at Petersburg Junior High School. She is also a 4- H girl, being a member of the four Leaf Clover 4-H Club.
