Thursday, October 13-October 19, 2022 www.shelbyinfo.com 704/484-1047 - shelby shopper & info - Page 21 Earl Scruggs Center Announces New Special Exhibit Cleveland County in Focus: The Photography of Ellis Studio The Earl Scruggs Center is proud to an- nounce the opening of special exhibition Cleveland County in Focus: The Photogra- phy of Ellis Studio on October 11, 2022. The exhibit will run through December 31, 2022. Forrest Ellis, born in 1890 on a tenant farm in Shelby, NC, established a career as the preeminent photographer in Cleveland Coun- ty in the early 1900s by capturing important moments for many Cleveland County resi- dents. Also a documentarian, Ellis traveled throughout the community, chronicling ev- eryday life in Cleveland County that included local businesses, athletics, schools, music, recreation and more. Cleveland County in Focus: The Photogra- phy of Ellis Studio tells the story of Forrest El- lis, his family and business, and the communi- ty in which he worked and lived. Photographs presented in the exhibition examine life and culture in Cleveland County throughout the 1950s, a decade of economic growth, prog- ress, and development for the community. The exhibition also examines the social and cul- tural structure of the county during this time. In addition to the photographs on display, the exhibition includes an interactive display of more images from the Ellis Photography collection. The Earl Scruggs Center encour- ages visitors to assist with history collecting efforts by providing memories and information on the people and places contained within these images. The Earl Scruggs Center will host an op- portunity to walk through the exhibition with Assistant Director and Curator Zach Dressel on Wednesday, October 19, at 10:30 am. Refreshments will be served. Visitors can see the Cleveland County in Focus: The Photography of Ellis Studio in the special exhibition gallery on the second fl oor of the Earl Scruggs Center. The Earl Scruggs Center, located on the historic court square in the heart of Shelby, NC, is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm, with extended hours until 6 pm on Wednesdays.
