Abriendo puertas a las oportunidades Opening doors to opportunities SYLVIA GARCÍA NEGOCIOS NOW ENTREVISTA A LA DIRECTORA DEL DEPARTAMENTO DE COMERCIO Y OPORTUNIDADES ECONÓMICAS DE ILLINOIS Y LA PRIMERA LATINA EN OCUPAR ESE PUESTO CLAVE PARA EL DESARROLLO DE LOS NEGOCIOS EN EL ESTADO. NEGOCIOS NOW INTERVIEWS THE DIRECTOR OF THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY AND THE FIRST LATINA TO HOLD THAT KEY POSITION FOR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT IN THE STATE. Negocios Now W hat does it mean to be the first Latina Director of DCEO? I'm incredibly proud to be in this role and serve the people of Illinois. When people think about business and economic development leaders, they don't usually think about people of color or women – so I know how important it is for me to be in this role. DCEO's mission to create economic opportunity is what inspires me, partly because of my abuelitos, who sacrificed their formal education and worked several jobs to make ends meet. While I'm very thankful for their sacrifices so I could be where I am, it illustrates the need to do everything we can to increase access to economic opportunity and good paying careers for all Illinoisians. How does DCEO work to support Lati- no businesses and help them take advan- tage of opportunities to grow their busi- ness? DCEO is committed to meeting busi- nesses where they are, with easy to access programming and support in both Spanish and English. We know starting and growing a business takes a lot of work, so we host training and webinars for business owners and we provide direct no cost one-on-one assistance at our Small Business Deve- lopment Centers across the state, inclu- ding help with certifications and navi- gating government contracting. We also engage community leaders to help sha- pe our work through our Latinx Busi- ness Colectivo. For more information, check out our website and social media or sign up for our newsletter. What is DCEO focused on now and what's ahead? Right now, DCEO is focused on con- tinued support for businesses and com- munities through our continued COVID relief efforts and new grant programs. We are launching opportunities to invest in workers, infrastructure, and businesses, big and small.
