Ariana Hunter will represent RCS in the region 8 Beginning Teacher of the Year process. The recognition is sponsored by the North Carolina Center for Advancement in Teacher (NCCAT). Hunter is from Marion, is a graduate of McDowell High School (class of 2017) and Western Carolina University where obtained dual degrees in Biology and Secondary Education with concentration in Biology (class of 2021). She began teaching at R-S Central High School August 2021. She teaches Earth Science, Physical Science, and Biology. In addition to her work inside the classroom, Hunter is the head cheer coach and co-student council adviser. "Being selected Beginning Teacher of the Year is a dream come true," she said. "I've always wanted to be a teacher and make a lasting impact on future generations," she said when she received the award. "I'm very excited and ready to represent Rutherford County," she said. R-S principal Phil Rogers said he is excited for Hunter. "She is so deserving, she is phenomenal and it's such an honor," Rogers said Hunter hopes to continue her academic endeavors in the near future; concentrating in science education with special emphasis on STEM education due to her love for math and science. Erika Stronach, RSC Human R e s o u r c e s director said, "We are so proud of Ariana Hunter for being selected as our newest Beginning Teacher of the Year. She is a tremendous teacher that truly has a heart for kids and is a natural leader inside and outside of the classroom. We are so fortunate that she chose Rutherford County Schools to begin her teaching career. We know Ariana will represent us well as she moves on to the regional competition." The NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year process was developed to honor beginning teachers and to retain teachers who show promise as excellent teachers and education leaders in North Carolina public schools and public charter schools. The NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year will receive: $5,000 cash prize, participation for the winner in a GoGlobal NC trip in 2024, instructional supply funds for the teacher's school.
