Monuments of Distinction 704-481-1198 www.riverhillmonuments.com Family Owned & Operated Since 1957 ©Community First Media Community First Media The best way to describe the emotional state of someone who has just experienced a traumatic loss is "numb." I am not a clinician or a healthcare professional, but I have witnessed it in my life and have seen it in others who are entering their journey of grief. Losing someone to death or having a traumatic episode leaves a person with an emotional overload. They literally have cried all their tears and cannot weep anymore. They are emotionally spent. It is important for those who are caregivers or friends to identify the numbing effect of a severe emotional shock. This "numbness" will take much time to subside. In caring for the grieving person, we must practice patience and understanding. Their functionality will be limited and at best they will be "going through the motions" of everyday living. It is at this time that they are the most vulnerable and will need those around them to help make important decisions and to get through daily tasks. The numbness will eventually wear off as time passes. The grieving person will look back at all that transpired as if it were a dream. The reality of what has happened will begin to take form and they will begin to process all that has taken place. Perhaps God gives us numbness at the time of loss for a cushion to soften the blows of death's harsh reality. Even in the midst of numbness, there is not a time that God is nearer to us than when we experience loss. "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart."
