After a long hot summer, I for one am excited to welcome this new season. Although the temperatures are expected to be a little high this week, we know it won't be for long. Sleeping with windows open is a true sign the season is changing. A few weeks ago I asked people on the street what they loved most about fall and the majority said cooler weather and the colors of the season — the orange, yellow, gold and red splashed leaves, the assortment of pumpkins and of course football. During a conversation with friends recently we were reminded, 'everyone doesn't wake up to the beauty we have in our back doors.' A long time ago now it seems, I would travel toward Bill's Creek in the fall for molasses making. The sounds of sugar cane being ground and then the taste of the fi rst drips of the molasses are memorable. Last week I picked more than a gallon of muscadines. Although my vines have produced gallons and gallons in the past, I've got a lot of work to do to get that quota again. I couldn't help but remember the days as a child walking through the woods near our house and picking wild muscadines that have crept up into trees at the edge of the forest. As I was picking my grapes last week, I could smell that unforgettable sweet scent. Muscadines are a sure sign of cooler weather. A few weeks ago my sister, brother-in-law and I took a day trip to Appalachian State and came home on the Blue Ridge Parkway - my personal favorite in this part of the country. By the way, did you know the Parkway turned 87 years old on Sept. 11. I love the slower ride, roadside stands, picnic tables, mountain streams and the feeling of touching the blue sky and the mountain tops. Here in Rutherford County, we can access the Blue Ridge Parkway in less than an hour. The parkway, by the way, is America's longest linear park running 469 miles through 29 counties in Virginia and North Carolina. The Parkway has been the most visited of the National Park system every year since 1946 except three years. As you may know by now, the Parkway is a favorite of mine because of its beauty, slower ride, roadside stands, picnic tables, mountain streams and beauty of the blue Carolina sky touching the mountains. Construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway got underway on Sept. 11. 1935. From the history books come these facts: The idea for the Blue Ridge Parkway was born when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited the newly constructed Skyline Drive in Virginia in 1933. Then U.S. Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia suggested to the president the road should be extended to connect with the recently established Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Roosevelt convened the governors of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee and asked that a planning team be created. On Nov. 24, 1933, Interior Secretary Harold Ickes approved this "park-to-park" highway as a public works project. With a budget of $16 million, Ickes hired Stanley Abbott, a New York landscape architect, to oversee the project, and Abbott's vision of a chain of parks and recreational areas with preserved viewsheds began to take shape. You know the rest of the story. If you are in a hurry, bypass the Parkway. It is there for our enjoyment to see the beauty of the creation of God all around. As children, the Parkway was often a Sunday drive with a picnic and relaxation. So many childhood memories of the Parkay. Just beyond the borders of the Blue Ridge Parkway lie the Great Smoky Mountains, that provide memorable times any season of the year, but especially in the fall. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is America's most visited national park and is almost within shouting distance. The fall season also brings outdoor festivals, music and the Colfax Free Fair. In today's issue of Rutherford Weekly, check out the community calendar and fi nd an event you will enjoy this season. Two of the county's newest and most awesome Parks - Kiwanis Park in Rutherfordton and POPS in Forest City, are hosting events Friday and Saturday. A free music concert featuring Ugandan Chinobay will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Kiwanis Park off Green Street and on Saturday check out the Partnership for Children of the Foothills "Get Set for Sesame Street Family Fun Day." From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the event is promised to be fi lled with family-friendly fun. Fall is here. Get out and enjoy the fall festivals, the long drives across the mountains, the country ham suppers, chicken pie suppers, high school football and all that goes along with this fabulous season in the foothills of North Carolina. Drive a little slower and take time to smell the aromas of this fabulous season. Contact Jean: gordonjean211@gmail.com IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR By: Jean Gordon NO MORE ROBERT H.
