Part 3 of the "Hunger and Thirst" series Relationships have ups and downs, especially with a significant other. There are even seasons when a person may not feel close or even enjoy their mate like they formerly did. They still love them, but are just experienc- ing a momentary disconnec- tion with them. In the same way, we may find ourselves in an occasional spiritual dry season where we are just not excited about reading our bible, going to church, or en- gaging in spiritual activities. We seem to have lost our hunger for God. The good news is we can rekindle that fire and stir up our appetites again! Observe the follow- ing ideas and verses: • If we are not hungry for God, we are probably full of ourselves! A great way to make room for God in our hearts is through fast- ing and praying. Joel 2:12 (NIV) states, "Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." • God wants us to ask him to help us. Psalm 145:1-19 (NIV) states, "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them." • Evaluate what's oc- cupying your time, energy, and mind. You may have to get rid of distractions. Even busyness with doing charita- ble activities can sometimes keep you from focusing on a relationship with the Lord. Luke 10:40-42 (ESV) states, "But Martha was dis- tracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, 'Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.' But the Lord an- swered her, 'Martha, Mar- tha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.'" The necessary part was Mary sit- ting down to listen to Jesus teach her and spending time in his presence. • Decide to not be satis- fied with the disconnection. Remember God is always desiring for us to grow spiri- tually. 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV) says, "And we all, with unveiled face, behold- ing the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." PRAY THIS PRAYER: "Lord you are indescrib- able and magnificent! I am in awe of who you are. Nothing is greater than you. Forgive me for allowing my heart to grow dull. May I be like David who said that 'as the deer pants for the water my soul pants after thee'. Please help me to identify the junk that hinders my re- lationship with you. Lord, I ask you to purify my heart and renew my mind by your word. May I be immersed in your presence and wrapped in your love. In Jesus' name I pray - Amen." Danyale Patterson would love to hear from you!
