For instance, where I live, July and Au- gust were really hot and dry. And that's what everyone started their conversations about. In fact, I heard that it was so hot that the trees were whistling for dogs. And that hot water was coming out of both taps in most homes. And that you could make sun tea instantly. And that you could get sun- burned through your car window. That it was so hot this summer that all you had to do was pull a potato out of the ground and add butter, salt, and pepper because it baked underground. And that you could break into a sweat the instant you stepped outdoors at 7:30 in the morning. And that one day, the temperature dropped below 95 and people started shivering. Well, maybe it wasn't that hot. But unless you live in a dome and control the thermostat, the weather isn't always going to be perfect. Just like the world isn't perfect, either. So just laugh and make the best of it…as you Live Positive in a negative world. How's the weather? Mental Health Association Launches Compeer Youth Program The Mental Health Association of Cleveland County (MHACC) began its Compeer program in 2017 with an initial focus on providing community based, supportive friendship to adults and seniors living with a mental health concern. The evi- dence-based Compeer model is based on the belief - backed by research - that the healing power of friendship can be trans- formative for an individual striving for mental wellness. This year MHACC's Compeer program is expanding to also serve youth in Cleveland County. In February 2022 MHACC was recognized as a sub-recipient of a 3 year federal grant awarded to Compeer International by the Offi ce of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). The grant funds are being used to build a Compeer Youth program serving ages 6 - 17. Lizz Grimsley is MHACC's new Compeer Youth Program Coordinator. She has an initial focus on organizing site based group mentoring for youth within a variety of themes such as arts and crafts, sports, and the outdoors. Regardless of the theme, Compeer's goal is to create spaces for mentors to connect with their mentees around shared interests. MHACC welcomes volunteers to join the Compeer communi- ty and become a friend to someone in need of additional social support. The volunteer onboarding process includes thorough screening and training on mental health related topics. Friends are matched based on compatibility of interests, personality, etc and enjoy time together in the community (4 hours/month). To apply to be a Compeer volunteer, submit an online applica- tion on MHACC's website :https://www.clevelandcountymha. org/compeer-volunteer-application MHACC's Compeer program is also accepting new referrals in all age groups. Individuals are most often referred to the Compeer program by their mental health provider. Compeer offers a community based support that compliments clinical in- terventions.
