Washington St. Shelby, NC 704-487-4521 www.arnold'sjewelry.com "The Diamond Leader" By Loretta Cozart The Uptown Shelby As- sociation's annual free sum- mer concert series concludes on Thursday, September 15 with Donna the Buffalo at the Bobby Bell Pavilion, located at 126 W Marion Street in Shelby, from 6-9 p.m. Donna the Buffalo of- fers everything you want in a roots band -- songs that matter, a groove that makes you dance, an audience that spans generations, and a musical voice that evokes a sense of community. Donna the Buffalo draws on a lot of musical influences, from country to rock 'n' roll, to bluegrass and old-time fiddle, as well as Cajun and Zydeco. Shelby Alive con- certs are free. Chalk Fest is brought to you by the Cleveland County Arts Council (CCAC) in part- nership with Uptown Shelby Association and is a fun, fam- ily friendly, sidewalk chalk competition on the Court Square, around the Earl Scruggs Center, Saturday, Sept. 17, 9 a.m. - noon. Chil- dren through adults, groups and individuals are invited to sign up for an individual square on which to create artwork during Chalk Fest. Judging will begin at noon with the winners announced when judging is completed. Prizes are $125 for best in the Group category (two or more people), $100 for adults (age 18+), $50 cash prize for best in Youth category (age 11 – 17) and $25 for best in the children's division (age 10 and under). There will also be plenty of free space for those who wish to participate without competing. The public is in- vited to watch the artists as the sidewalk masterpieces are created, or to enjoy them later in the day. In conjunction with Chalk Fest, CCAC is also host- ing their annual Y'Art Sale, a one-of-a-kind art supply yard sale on the Courthouse Square. You will find great deals on: Frames, Art, Pot- tery, Easels, Fabric, Yarn, Sewing Machine, Thread, Supplies, Tools, and more. You can support the Cleve- land County Arts Council by helping them clean out your closets and studios! October 7 & 8 brings Cleveland County Arts Coun- cil's semi-annual Foothills Quilters Guild Members Ex- hibit at their home at 111 S. Washington St. in Shelby. An opening reception is being held for Mystery Mas- terpieces, a fun new twist on their much-loved Mystery Art Sale & Exhibit on October 13, from 5 – 7 p.m. Artists have been invited to create 11x17 original masterpieces. Pieces will go on sale at 5 p.m. on October 13th. You will find out who created a masterpiece only after you purchase it. The exhibit con- tinues until November 2. October 15 also brings Mush Music & Mutts Liver- mush Festival, North Caro- lina's Official Fall Liver Mush Festival on Saturday, Octo- ber 15th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Uptown Shelby. Recognized in regional and national media including Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods, this festival cel- ebrates the unique regional delicacy and local food staple known as liver mush. Festival highlights include a liver mush eating contest, recipe contest and cookoff, live music, and more than 80 craft, food, and beverage vendors.
