Editor The Brown County Democrat – a blue-ribbon weekly newspaper located in Nashville, Indiana is seeking its next editor. This individual will supervise and contribute to the weekly production and generation of news content for our print newspaper and website. Our editor will supervise other staff members and evaluate their perfor- mance as needed. Our editor also serves as the lead content producer. This person will assign stories and photos and edit content to maintain the quality our readers have come to expect. Editors are responsible for creating a news budget for the weekly newspaper and special sec- tions as the opportunity arises. Our editor should be adept at problem solving using practical judge- ment and be self-motivated. This individual should have excellent com- munication skills including, written, oral and listening skills. Candidates should have a four-year degree or equivalent experience. Some super- visory experience is also helpful. The position reports to the group publisher. The visual journalist will work with reporters and editors to plan the very best photos and videos, attract new audiences through Instagram and other social media and find opportunities to tell stories through photographs. This staff pho- tographer will also help train interns, maintain a list of photo stringers and work with the newsroom staff to identify visual opportunities. The visual journalist must obvi- ously be an outstanding photogra- pher in their own right, and because University of Notre Dame sports drives a lot of readership, sports photography skills are crucial. Immigrant Community Reporter The Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a reporter to write about and for immigrants while also covering com- munities in Indianapolis. This reporter is key to IndyStar's mission of expanding equity cover- age in Indianapolis by reporting on the things that are important to underserved communities. We will get to know these communities by owning geographic areas. Along with covering the growing immigrant com- munities, this reporter will focus on the western townships (Pike, Wayne, Decatur) of Indianapolis. Within these three townships, this reporter will focus specifically on issues impacting neighborhoods and people we haven't traditionally covered. This includes immigrant communities, communities of color, religious minorities and economically depressed areas. We will cover the daily concerns of these communities, from schools to roads to home prices. While fluency in Spanish is preferred, it is not required. This is part of a larger team tasked with covering social inequity in housing, social services, immigration, schools, workplaces, cultural institu- tions, the legal system and health care. The ideal candidate will experi- ment with different storytelling tech- niques, lengths and topics to reach audiences on all platforms. They will know how to use a wide variety of sourcing to find interesting and thoughtful angles on the news of the day as well as pitch and develop unique stories beyond the pressing events of daily coverage. The candidate must demonstrate strong news judgment. The candidate will work closely with all sections in the newsroom. We look for journalists who pos- sess specific traits: intellectual curios- ity, a sense of justice/purpose, kind- ness, passion and compassion.
