The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, August 19, 2022 20 By Leo Pusztai TV Media Dodging disaster with Bill Nye: Tuning into news programming can leave one feeling hopeless thanks to the onslought of natural and political catastrophes around the globe. Bill Nye ("Bill Nye the Science Guy") tries to flip the narrative by using sci- ence to survive the worst possible apocalyptic events in his new series, "The End is Nye," premiering Thursday, Aug. 25, on Peacock. According to the trailer, Nye joins a fictional organi- zation called "The Disaster Institute," where he simu- lates six terrifying apocalyp- tic disasters — both natural and human-made — only to utilize his most famous weapon to combat the threat: science. Nye breaks down the cause-and-effect of each di- saster and how, with con- scious and collective effort, humans could not simply survive disasters of this kind, but also reduce the events' impact or even prevent them from happening altogether. (Disasters featured in the trailer include asteroid im- pacts, advanced technolo- gies and alien invasion.) Though the premise of the show is surviving the end of the world as we know it, "The End is Nye" carries a hopeful message at its core: Humans still have the power to choose their own fate. While it's easy to become cynical regarding humanity's future, Nye offers viewers logical perspectives on frightening potential out- comes as a reminder that it is not too late to take effec- tive action in the face of doom. Executive producer Seth MacFarlane ("Family Guy") is recognizable in cameos for each of the episodes and his production company, Fuzzy Door, joins Universal Televi- sion Alternative Studio and UCP to produce the unscript- ed reality program.
