Tabitha Lucas, a student in advanced manufacturing at Isothermal Community College, became the college's fi rst registered manufacturing apprentice this week. She will go to work and continue her studies at Sonoco, a plastics injection molding operation in Forest City. The facility primarily makes packaging components for many types of consumer products. "We are excited to have this partnership with the college and look forward to what it will mean for our company and the community," said Ben Lucas, Sonoco's plant manager. This particular a p p r e n t i c e s h i p will span three years, but other companies can customize similar experiences to meet specifi c needs, said Mark Franklin, Isothermal's director of Customized Training and Development. "We see this as a great workforce development tool that will lead to greater student success," said Franklin. Lucas is looking forward to the apprenticeship. "I'm grateful for the opportunity and I can't wait to get started," she said Wednesday at a ceremony where she signed the offi cial commitment documents. For more information on participating in or hosting a registered apprenticeship program, contact Franklin at mfranklin@isothermal.edu or 828-395-1677. Cooper announced the beginning of the Governor's School Supply Drive and encouraged people to donate school supplies for public school students and teachers across the state. On average, teachers in North Carolina spend over $500 of their own money on supplies for their classrooms each year. The Governor's School Supply Drive will run through August 31, 2022. As in past years, the State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) and Communities In Schools of North Carolina are partnering to collect and deliver the school supplies. Donation bins will be available in all State Employees' Credit Union locations statewide. North Carolina residents can participate by dropping off supplies at a SECU location or by organizing a drive at their own workplace.
