Her- ling, National Nonprofit Day com-memorates that date more than a hundred years ago when the Tariff Act became law and gave exemptions for charitable institutions and nonprofit organizations. Herring was a renowned speaker, best-selling author, and business strategist and her purpose for National Nonprofit Day was said to be "to educate, enlight- en, and empower others to make a difference." All these years later, National Nonprofit Day continues to celebrate the world-changing work of local nonprofits, as well as on a global scale. Monterey County is for-tunate to be home to many outstanding chari- table or-ganizations and you'll be in-troduced to dozens of them in these pages. National Nonprofit Day recognizes more than a nonprofits' primary altruistic goals (awareness, research, and aid); it also acknowledges the added positive im- pacts they have on their com-munities, and around the world. This special section is a chance for our readers to learn about the diverse efforts of our non- profits and their missions. Non-profits constantly strive to gain support, to engage the community, and to celebrate those who dedicate their time to worthy causes in an effort to make the world a better place.
