Day laborers are workers who generally wait outside of home im- provement stores seeking potential employment. As one would imagine, this isn't an ideal hiring process for either party, which is where the Day Worker Center of Santa Cruz steps up. The Day Workers Center provides businesses and individuals with screened and reliable workers for a variety of both short term and long term labor jobs. This provides those seeking laborers with a direct line to workers who meet their specific needs. As well as providing a safe hiring space for the workers to get guaranteed fair treatment and pay. And of course as a nonprofit, their services are provided at no cost to employers or to the worker. The Day Worker Center acts as a representative for labor workers, often ESL workers, and provides re- sources to ensure that they have fair and safe working environments. Through- out the pandemic, the center has increasingly become more relied upon to provide families with the stability of income from reliable sources. As a Laborer, without places like the Day Workers Cen- ter, there is little account- ability for employers of laborers and unfortunately exploitation is a reality for workers. The Day Worker Center eliminates this risk, and ensures fair pay for hard work. They also host weekly worker safety meetings to make sure that laborers are using safe work practices and work- ing in safe conditions. Expanding community awareness is the Day Worker Center's current main objective, they are always looking for new potential employers. They are able to provide for a wide array of labor tasks such as painting, building, gardening, moving, cleaning, general handy work and more. Whether it be a small or large project, Day Worker center has the labor needs for San- ta Cruz county met. As a provider, CHT has the Diabetes Health Cen- ter (DHC) which provides diabetes and nutrition education and support for those living with diabe- tes and prediabetes; the VeggieRx program that is a produce prescription pro- gram for those facing food insecurity; the El Mercado, a health and wellness-fo- cused farmer's market; and the El Mini Mercado, a year-round food pantry for patients with nutrition and diabetic needs. As a funder, CHT annually invests in local organizations to improve wellness and build health equity in the Pajaro Valley. Since the inception of its gifting programs in 2001, nearly $4.6 million has been awarded to impact 250,000 individuals. As a partner, CHT col- laborates with agencies and industries to support the health and wellness of the community. Some ex- amples include: the Food, Farming, and Health Policy Council in part- nership with the Second Harvest Food Bank, an advisory group dedicat- ed to addressing local food access issues; the Carey-Davis Community Garden in collaboration with Watsonville Police Activities League, which entailed the revitalization and maintenance of the garden to increase access to fresh food; and Veggie Voucher, a partnership with PVUSD to provide fresh food for students and their families.
