Page 4 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 www.rutherfordweekly.com Thursday, August 11-August 17, 2022 Our offi ce has been notifi ed of a recent surge in scam calls to North Carolinians. These scammers pose as hospital employees and attempt to steal personal information or money from unsuspecting patients and caregivers. Follow the tips below to protect your personal information and keep your hard-earned money safe. • Don't rely on area codes or caller ID to determine if a caller is trustworthy. Scammers will often call with an area code that will look familiar to victims or match up with their phony backstory. Modern technology makes it possible for individuals to manipulate caller ID, fooling the system into displaying that the number belongs to a hospital. • Know that hospital offi cials will never call you to ask for sensitive information. Be wary of anyone asking for your Social Security number, bank account information, or fi nancial details. When in doubt, hang up and contact the hospital directly to fi nd out if they require any information or payment from you. • If you receive a suspicious call, notify the hospital and our offi ce. If someone is impersonating hospital staff and attempting to defraud patients, report it to the hospital. They can issue a warning through their network, preventing scammers from successfully deceiving their victims. You should also report these phone scams to our offi ce's Consumer Protection Division at h t t p s : / / n c d o j . g ov / f i l e - a - complaint or 1-877-5-NO- SCAM. This most recent wave of scams is a reminder to always be vigilant when speaking with unknown callers. By remembering these tips and sharing them with your friends and family, you can help curb the tide of hospital phone scams, keep your money in your pocket, and ensure that your personal information stays protected. SEPT. 29 SEPT. 29 th th - Oct. 9 - Oct. 9 th th INTRODUCING INTRODUCING FREE SHOWS FREE SHOWS WITH ADMISSION WITH ADMISSION Annie McEntyre, a physical science teacher at East Rutherford High School, has been named a 2022-23 Kenan Fellow. Her fellowship was made possible through a partnership between American Zinc Products (AZP) and the Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership at N.C. State University. McEntyre is part of the 2022-23 Kenan Fellows cohort and will learn how AZP creates a sustainable future through a commitment to safety and the environment in the communities they serve. Following a three-week summer internship at AZP, she will translate her new knowledge into hands-on and engaging lessons for students and share with her colleagues. This is the second consecutive year, AZP has supported a Kenan Fellow. Last year, AZP Kenan Fellow Beverly Owens of Cleveland County Schools worked with experts at AZP to create several artifacts that translated the zinc recycling process into the classroom. In addition to classroom materials, she created AZP Roadshow kit that teachers can use to show the steps of how zinc is recycled. "We're excited to partner with the Kenan Fellowship program again in 2022. As the only producer of zinc metal, solely from recycled material, AZP is committed to sustainability in every aspect of our operation. Annie's passion for education and her background in science aligns perfectly with our goal to support STEAM education in our community," said Kobus de Wet, VP & General Manager of AZP. Kenan fellowships are awarded through a competitive application process. As part of the fellowship, the educators will attend a series of professional learning institutes focused on project-based learning, digital learning, and leadership development. Teachers remain in the classroom while completing the yearlong fellowship. Educators who complete the program say they feel a deeper connection to their community and grow professionally as part of a statewide network of teacher leaders. As their leadership skills grow, Kenan Fellows lead pro- actively within their schools and districts. Many become empowered to infl uence and lead educational innovation at state and national levels. "Because of industry supporters like AZP, we are able to provide teachers with the skills needed to build industry-education partnerships that make stronger connections between desirable workforce skills and classroom content," said Elaine Franklin, director of the Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership. About AZP: American Zinc Products is located in Rutherford County and is a large employer of the region who aims to be an integral part of their community. AZP uses unique technology to transform a WAELZ Oxide into Special High Grade Zinc, one of the highest commercial grades of zinc, used primarily for galvanizing steel. Galvanized steel is used in numerous industrial applications, such as the fabrication of highway guard rails, car bodies, and household appliances. Zinc is a well- known dietary supplement and is also used in pharmaceutical applications.
