Page 16 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 www.rutherfordweekly.com Thursday, July 28-August 3, 2022 Over the past two months nonprofi ts in Rutherford County have been the focus of numerous mission teams who traveled across the United States to be of service here. A new group of youth and adult chaperones arrived each week. They are affi liated with YouthWorks - a national organization that provides Christ-centered mission trips for more than 10,000 teenagers and adult leaders in dozens of communities across the nation. Today marks the fi nal work day for the summer for the visiting teams until next year. Since early June teams have been housed at Spindale United Methodist Church and each week day the teams, with the guidance of the leader Grace, have been sent across Rutherford County to help nonprofi ts with work local volunteers never have time to do. The youth have worked at food pantries, at Rutherford County Schools YMC summer program for children, at thrift stores, Rutherford Housing Partnership (RHP) and even at a community garden helping harvest fresh vegetables for food pantry distribution. One nonprofi t volunteer in the county said recently the youth were able to do accomplish so many tasks that are often put on the back burner due to time constraints. Life in thrift stores will be a little easier for the next months because these youth worked. At the Habitat ReStore last week one young Minnesota teen said he joined the YouthWorks team from his area believing it would be fun. He was not disappointed, he said. Gathered in the lunch area of the Restore youth and adult leaders said they represented six Minnesota churches. There were 17 youth scattered in various areas of the county doing a variety of projects. When their work was completed, they spent a day in Lake Lure, Chimney Rock and the Hickory Nut Gorge before heading back home - 20 hours away. Fortunately, these youth were able to fl y to North Carolina. Many other youth a long time on the road to come to Rutherford County. A group of youth from Texas spent 15 hours in a 15-passenger church van with no bells or whistles. Who would do that? People who have a heart for others, enjoy adventures and spending time getting to know one another and drawing closer to the Lord. Adventures here included pulling weeds around the Chase Corner Ministry sign in front of the facility; gathering over 1,000 pounds of potatoes for curing from the Ruff'ton Roots Community Garden, hauling bags and bags of clothing to a tractor-trailer rig at Washburn Outreach Center to be distributed to others who need clothes around the world. The youth assisted with RHP construction teams on building handicapped ramps. At Washburn Outreach Community Center over the summer they also assisted each week with packing food boxes, loading cars, cleaning areas of the thrift store that needed attention. A group of Wisconsin, traveling 16 hours on a van, painted doors at the food pantry and helped to organize the food warehouse. They were willing to do anything that needed attention. At BASICS Ministries in Henrietta they packed food boxes and organized the thrift store's toy and furniture areas. While these young people and adults have spent their summer on the road traveling to Rutherford County, dozens of our own youth have spent their summer doing the same thing in other areas of the country. Joined by adult chaperones, the youth also did whatever. Youth have traveled to hurricane ravaged areas of the state to help residents there, they've traveled to inner cities and to rural states to help in anyway they could. I was honored to be on such a trip this summer with 29 others from Florence Church. Our group worked in Rose Hill that has been hit twice by hurricanes in the past fi ve years. It was a joy to witness our youth who worked with our adults on numerous projects, learning trades and life lessons. They did construction work, cleaned, baked cakes, put together a children's activity set, built wheelchair ramps, washed dishes and shared time with strangers and their own peers. It's been a long hot summer so far — but how refreshing to witness the youth across the country and Rutherford County be willing to give of themselves to help others. I'm grateful to have witnessed these YouthWorks teams on the job for over 7 weeks in Rutherford County and extremely blessed to witness how the love of Christ was shared through words and actions. Yes, these youth are our future and from a senior citizen's point of view - it's bright. Mission trips for youth, adults and even senior citizens is life changing. It's never too late to be a part of helping others right here at home or in other places.
