Do you go to dinner in large groups in hopes you can try a little off everyone's plate? Do you want to know what makes a chef tick, where an ingredient is sourced or why sugar just happens to be so good on a Korean corn dog? Readers of The Herald-Times, part of the USA Today Network, want to know these things and so much more. Recently written up in Forbes as an "unlikely epi- center of eclectic global cuisine," Bloomington, Indiana, is a foodie heaven. Indiana University's pres- ence in our community brings a diversity of culture. Bloomington restaurateurs offer vibrant, creative menus, and our community is home to more than 300 dining establish- ments. We are seeking a reporter who thrives on the dining scene and loves being the first to know about openings, closings and trends in the food and restaurant world. From diving into restaurant inspec- tions to being invited to every soft opening, we are looking for a reporter whose world revolves around the tastes, smells and shared experiences of food. The successful candidate will cover this scene in a variety of ways, potentially including a column that's written with voice, enterprise stories and via other media such as video and podcast. Here's what we're looking for: Social media expertise. Ability to tell stories in imagina- tive ways while maintaining consis- tency in the quality of copy, includ- ing good grammar. Ability to consistently produce content in a deadline-driven, dynamic environment. Good time management and ability to meet deadlines. A bachelor's degree and at least a year of journalism experience (student media and internships count!) OR experience in the res- taurant industry and excellent writ- ing skills. A valid driver's license and reli- able transportation. To apply, create a single file with a cover letter on why you're a great fit for this role, your resume and 3-5 examples of your best writing and upload it as a PDF. Email applica- tion materials to Jill Bond, jbond@ heraldt.com. Public Safety Reporter The Times of Northwest Indiana seeks a creative, energetic and versatile reporter to cover a wide variety of topics, including public safety. This person must have a knack for spotting trends, profiling interesting people and getting to the heart of stories. The right candidate will be a talented and inspired writer who is not satisfied with merely covering the news. We want an aggressive reporter who can jump on a big breaking story. We want a creative reporter who can find news and sources that others have over- looked. And we want a flexible reporter who is comfortable working alone or with colleagues. The successful candidate understands complex issues and writes fairly, clearly, accurately and authoritatively. Experience produc- ing multi-media reports for online publication is preferred. Learn more or apply online at www.nwi.com/timesjobs. Reporter Thrive in a fast-paced environ- ment? Think your skills are versa- tile? Aspire to work alongside and learn from award-winning journal- ists bent on making a difference? Take a look at us, newsandtribune. com and facebook.com/newsand- tribune. We're a 7,000-circulation daily newspaper in Southern Indiana, a booming area where entrepreneurs and artists have found a home. There's ready access to metro amenities, too, thanks to Louisville across the river. We're going to fill our reporter opening with someone who wants to break news, and who digs into stories like a backhoe. The right person can write, shoot photos and video and use social media to find stories, reach sources and drive content. Sound like you? Send your stuff, that's a cover letter, resume and published clips, to the editor, daniel. suddeath@newsandtribune.com. General Assignment Reporter The South Bend Tribune, part of the USA Today network, is look- ing for an enterprising and digitally focused reporter who is ready to tackle a wide range of local news stories and help us grow our read- ership. You will be responsible for covering investigative/watchdog stories, breaking news and in-depth features. We want someone with the ability to dig out stories and then aggressively chase them. You will be expected to constantly seek out topics and issues that resonate with our local audience. A major focus of the job will be covering our primary county, St. Joseph County, including government actions, poli- tics, topical issues, features and profiles. But the reporting could also extend to other areas, includ- ing business, housing and the University of Notre Dame, among others. At The Tribune, we pride our- selves on relevant, hard-hitting local coverage that resonates with readers on all platforms. We're looking for someone who is ready to tackle a wide range of stories, embrace our digital focus and produce first-rate journalism. The ability to work closely with a team, as well as a strong social media presence, are musts. This is a chance to make your mark in local news coverage, build a strong portfolio and collaborate with Gannett's other Indiana news organizations, including the Indy Star. Please send six to eight work samples to Cory Havens at rhavens@sbtinfo.com. Roving Enterprise Reporter The Indianapolis Star/IndyStar. com, a winner of last year's Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a reporter who has the curiosity, ini- tiative and writing chops to take a big news event and find the story no one else has. This is not an entry-level posi- tion. The ideal candidate will under- stand the lifecycle of a story and how to report and write thoughtful enterprise to publish within days of a news event. IndyStar is look- ing for someone who will experi- ment with different storytelling techniques, lengths and topics to reach audiences on all platforms. The candidate will know how to use a wide variety of sourcing to find interesting and thoughtful angles on stories to push forward the news of the day, but one who also can pitch and develop unique stories beyond the pressing events of daily coverage. The candidate must demon- strate strong news judgment. The candidate will work closely with all sections in the newsroom and will be comfortable collaborating with other reporters, editors, graphic art- ists and photographers. The candidate should demon- strate a strong understanding of audience metrics, engagement tactics and search engine optimiza- tion. But that's not enough. IndyStar prides itself on a newsroom culture that is collegial and collaborative. We require not only talented report- ers and writers but good team- mates who support each other and work well across the newsroom with all our teams. We look for journalists who pos- sess specific traits: intellectual curi- osity, a sense of justice/purpose, kindness, passion and compassion. We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order: 1. Your resume – one to two pages. 2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job. 3. Links to 3 online samples of your work. Show us what you've produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
