As I was browsing the internet, I noticed that there are some interesting celebrations in the month of June. A few are… • National Accordion Awareness Month • National Adopt a Cat Month • National Country Cooking Month • National Give a Bunch of Balloons Month • Turkey Lovers Month Some topics were very serious such as Men's Health Awareness, and some were fun like National Candy Month. One topic in particular caught my eye called "National Effective Com- munications Month". It made me think about my Christian walk and how I was doing with my con- versations and interac- tions with others. I know that all of us have been guilty of saying things that were unkind, but we must strive to be careful to use our words wisely. As Benjamin Franklin stated, "A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over." Also, Proverbs 12:18 (GNT) says, "Thought- less words can wound as deeply as any sword, but wisely spoken words can heal." It is very important to remember the magni- tude of what we say to our family members, col- leagues, and even strang- ers. "The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words." "A broken bone can heal, but the wound a word opens can fester forever." - Anonymous I believe that National Ef- fective Communications Month was established to remind us that we must foster positive commu- nication skills. The bible also admonitions us to pay attention to what we are saying. Proverbs 21:23 (CEV) "Watching what you say can save you a lot of trouble." GROW UP Self-control of the tongue is an attribute of maturity. Little children will say anything that is on their minds whether it's polite or not, but an adult is supposed to be able to think before they speak. In fact, having self-control in this one area trickles down to other areas of your life. James 3:2 (AMP) says, "For we all stumble and sin in many ways. If any- one does not stumble in what he says [never say- ing the wrong thing], he is a perfect man [fully developed in character, without serious flaws], able to bridle his whole body and rein in his en- tire nature [taming his human faults and weak- nesses]." PRAY THIS PRAYER: "Lord, I praise you for giving us a way to communicate with You and others. Thank You for being a God that hears and answers prayers. Fa- ther, forgive me for fail- ing You in my thoughts, words, and deeds. I am ashamed of some of the things that have come out of my mouth. Please set a guard over my mouth LORD, and keep watch over the door of my lips. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen."
