Outdoors From page 1 The advantage of native trees and plants is that they are easy to care for and are also good for the local eco-system, said Rob Dummert, vice president of sales and development at Johnson's Nursery in Menomonee Falls. "They are supposed to be here, so there is less maintenance," he said, noting that the website for Johnson's Nursery offers information about native plants as well as available inven- tory. The business also runs a community tree planting program, an effort that includes tree planting events at schools, area parks and other locations. The program promotes education about planting. "The goal is to get kids and community mem- bers excited about planting trees. To learn and appreciate native plants," Dummert said. Johnson's Nursery works to collect seeds from southeast Wisconsin to ensure native trees and plants are available. "These trees have the genetics of this area. They will interact with native birds and insects," Dummert said. Trees ... wait for them Planting can be done during the summer, although Dummert said the fall season is the best time for planting trees. That is a season when trees are shutting down for the year and will benefit from fall rain followed by winter snow and then spring rain, Dummert said. Currently, he said Johnson's Nursery has a lot it is producing and making available. But he suggested shoppers check the business website about availability when planning landscape projects. "There's high demand for plant material everywhere," Dummert said. Also popular lately are homeowners looking for green screens, or tall trees and plants that offer backyard privacy, according to Dummert. He said many customers seek arborvitaes for this purpose, but there are other possibilities for achieving a privacy screen. "Junipers are a really good option," Dum- mert said. "It's a green screen but is also deer resistant." Although prickly and so a bit more work to install, junipers offer a fast growth rate and uniform look, Dummert said. Johnson's Nursery does installs for cus- tomers and also offers a "We Plan, You Plant" service. "If you need small foundation planting around your house, we will do the design for you," said Dummert, who said the service is free with the purchase of plants from the nursery. Green screen Junipers are an option for homeowners looking to create backyard privacy screen, accord- ing to Rob Dummert, vice presi- dent of sales and business devel- opment at Johnson's Nursery in Menomonee Falls. The nursery has its own origina- tion of the plant, called the Star Power Juniper. "Its name comes from the blue- green, star-like juvenile foliage that gives the tree a delicate, almost sparkling texture," the nursery website said. The plant was selected in 1998 by Mike Yang at Johnson's Nurs- ery and is suspected to be a hybrid between Juniper chinensis and Juniper communis, the site said. The plant is a tough and hardy and is the fastest growing upright Juniper evaluated at Johnson's Nursery, according to the busi- ness site.
