Norris, now 17, recently graduated among the top-performing students from Scotts Valley High School. (Lucy Norris -- Contributed) said he has watched other students naturally gravitate to Norris in the three years he had known her, and under- scored her prowess in the swimming pool. Crawford also praised Norris' "wicked sense of humor" -- often reveal- ing itself in a self-dep- recating way. He noted her strong work ethic, citing Norris' contin- uous dedication to a beach cleanup club she helped co-launch more than two years ago and kept going through the challenges of remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic. "I think that's the first thing that really stands out for her," Crawford said. "Academically, as well as athletically and in all the areas of her life, she's just a natural leader by example.
