It's OK to be'in a pickle' children on a dreary day on Bain- bridge Island in 1965. The two poked around Pritchard's island summer home, found some table tennis paddles and a perforat- ed ball, and suggested the children play on Pritchard's badminton court, where, eventually, the net was lowered to the height of a regulation tennis net. A third friend, Barney McCallum, improved the paddles and helped establish the rules, and soon other neighbors — children and adults alike — joined in the fun, before the game was gradually migrated to the mainland. Today, the family-friendly game has spread around the world cul- minating in fast-growing classes and leagues, dedicated pickleball courts throughout communities, widely attended tournaments, and dedicated fans. Let's play! When it comes to playing pickle- ball, it seems everyone is welcome and the more, the merrier. For Silvas, that includes "all demographics, all ages and all skill le vel s," he sa ys. " I'v e h ad cla sses with seniors in their 80s and 12-year old kids playing together and having a blast! They didn't even notice the age difference." Aiello sees this with her group, too. "We love how pickleball brings so many people, young and old, to- gether and they all play with each other," she says. "We see 80-year- old women playing with 40-year- old men or a grandmother playing with her grandchild."
