And every day, they put their lives at risk to do so. One of the most dangerous parts of a fi rst responder's job is stepping out on the side of the road, whether it is for a traffi c stop, to assist a motorist, or to investigate a crash. That's why, from May 6-8, the N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program (NCGHSP) is partnering with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind motorists to Move Over or Slow Down for stopped emergency vehicles during NHTSA's "Move Over, It's the Law," safety campaign. In addition to media outreach and social media, motorists will also see highway messaging signs reminding them of the law. "Since 2017, there have been 149 law enforcement offi cers killed in traffi c- related incidents across the nation, including in North Carolina. We implore everyone to do their part to keep our offi cers and other fi rst responders safe as they work to help motorists on our roadways. Move over if you see a stopped emergency vehicle, and if you can't move over, slow down as you pass them," said Colonel Freddy Johnson Jr., commander of the NC State Highway Patrol. "This isn't just being a good citizen or polite driver - it's the law in North Carolina," said NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell. "Motorists can face a $250 or more fi ne for failing to obey it." Move over laws are in place in all 50 states. When North Carolina's law was passed in 2002, it directed motorists to change lanes or slow down when passing a stopped emergency vehicle with fl ashing lights on the roadside. In 2012, the law was revised to include "public service" vehicles. Public service vehicles are any vehicle used to assist motorists or law enforcement offi cers with wrecked or disabled vehicles, or is a vehicle being used to install, maintain or restore utility service, including electric, cable, telephone, communications and gas and displays an amber light. This also includes NCDOT's IMAP emergency response vehicles and tow trucks. State and Federal Agencies' Message to Motorists: Move Over or Slow Down for Stopped Emergency Vehicles Article Provided By: ncdot The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services today announced it has been awarded $3.3 million to expand support for people in mental health crisis. This funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration to the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services will help North Carolina transition the Suicide Prevention Lifeline from the current 10-digit number to an easier, three-digit number — 9-8-8 — for people having suicidal thoughts or experiencing a mental health crisis. On July 16, 2022, 9-8-8 will become the national three-digit dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, replacing the current phone number of 1-800-273-8255. People can talk, chat or text with trained call center staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year. Call center staff can provide crisis counseling along with information on local community resources and referrals. "Increasing access to behavioral health services, especially in times of crisis is a top priority," said NCDHHS Secretary Kody H. Kinsley. "9- 8-8 is an easy-to-remember number people can access from wherever they are and get the help they need. This is a resource that will save lives and is an important investment in supporting the behavioral health and resilience of North Carolinians." Call volume is expected to increase with 9-8-8 implementation, and grant funds will be used to ensure the call center is staffed with trained counselors to meet the increased demand. Callers will have access to trained crisis counselors and will receive follow-up services as needed. "We are excited for the rollout of 9-8-8 and want to ensure every caller receives quick access to the help they need," said Deepa Avula, Director of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services. "This will be instrumental in increasing access to crisis services in our communities." This grant will run from April 30, 2022–April 29, 2024.
